The undersigned petition the United Nations to preserve the moon which revolves around the Earth as a World Heritage Site in conformance with the World Heritage Convention of 1972. The Moon is in danger of commercial and technological exploitation which could permanently disfigure it and even change its appearance as seen from the earth. It is not too early to begin to stop its exploitation. The Moon is a profound cultural symbol, metaphor and inspiration for humankind. It has been so since the existence of the first humans. It is profoundly in our literature, our art and even our dreams. There has already been desecration of the Moon that humanity would not stand for in the eight hundred and thirty sites now protected by UNESCOs World Heritage Organization. (see the full list at http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/. Protection of the Moon by UNESCO can still allow carefully regulated scientific investigations. It would outlaw, however, careless exploitation and desecration for profit.
