Claire O'Reilly | I went straight to Darley after the birth of my first child at Derby City Hospital. I then had my second child at the Unit, including all the ante natal care. The difference between the two births was huge, the first delivery felt like a medical production line and involved a lot of medical intervention and pain relief , the second was a completely natural experience with only a minimal amount of gas and air at the very end.

| 155 | Saskia Tallis | The closure of another, the last?, local midwife-led Maternity Unit reminds me of the closure of the brilliant Ashbourne Maternity Unit many years ago.
The imminent closure of that unit got me out joining the protesters on the street. Another big mistake is about to be made if the Darley Unit were to be closed permanently. Short-sighted management decisions that will lead to a real deterioration in the care of many women at such a demanding time in their lives. |
Julia Cousens-Smith | Darley Maternity Unit should be promoted and developed as a example of best practice. It must not be closed.
paul bainbridge | peoples health and welfare should never be compromised for any reason,
Debbie Webster |
Victoria Waites | It is very important that Maternity Units like the one at Darley are kept open. They are a much pleasanter place for women to have their babies.

Fiona Rogers | I have put my testimony onto the website. Darley Maternity Unit is incredibly valuable. It takes pressure off overworked hospital maternity units, it gives excellent care to new mothers with particular needs, it helps new mothers to breastfeed (and keep breastfeeding). There is so much more I could say, but no space here to say it.
| 163 | janice wigley | Several years ago Ashbourne Maternity Home was closed,a great loss to our area! Now we have to travel to Derby City Hospital, the distance is too great
and that wonderful special care you should receive after having a baby is gone, they can't send you home soon enough!Surely size does matter and the biggest isn't always the best! |
Martin Compton |
Sandra Chadfield | do not shut this maternity unit, it has been there for mothers over the years and is a very nice and convient place to have a baby. Its is nice to know that there is one close by and that they care for all us mothers alike better than most places!
Helen Henderson | I had my son at the unit and I couldn't have asked for a better birth. The care and skills of the midwives were second to none. I know many women now having babies who are very disappointed not to have the opportunity to use this centre. These closures are puttiing women at risk!
Ruth Allen | I was very privileged to spend some time at Darley Maternity Unit after the birth of my second child. Having experienced ante-natal care at three different hospitals, for my three children, I am of the opinion that Darley offers a far superior service to anything else I have experienced. It is designed for local people to use locally, which, at the bewildering time of childbirth and coping with a new baby, can be extremely reassuring and comforting to new mothers and their families.

Rachael Spittlehouse | I would just like to say how rediculous the proposed plans are, I transferred to DMU shortly after giving birth to my son in sheffield, and i strongly believe we both benefitted, without the excellent help, support and care i recieved over the four days i spent there, i wouldn't have been able to breastfeed let alone do a number of other things. I believe DMU should be used as an example for other PCT's to follow, especially in the case of first time mothers like myself. I believe there should be more care in the community not less.
Monica haddock | I am wanting to birth at Darley Dale in July
Simon Farrier | I am wanting my wife to birth at Darley Dale in July
Jacqui Booth | As a ex-resident of Chesterfield and now Editor of the North and South Derbyshire netmums sites this news concerns me greatly - please visit www.netmums.com and have a read of our campaigns "Families need Health Visitors" and "Better Support for Post Natal Depression" to find out why mums can't afford to lose any more services.

Alyson Walker | I have recently discovered that I am pregnant which should be a happy time for me. I only recently moved to the area and knew about Darley Maternity unit's great reputation. Now, instead of feeling excited about having my baby, I feel scared and quite frankly stressed about the prospect of having to travel for miles to attend appointments and being in a large, unfriendly place at a time when I need to feel safe and comfortable.
Mrs Sharon Spibey | Darley was a great help when i had my baby 11 months ago, not having to travel to chesterfield was such a releif. The care i recieved was invaluable.
Gemma Healey |
tracy pilkington | I've had both my babies at Darley and would highly recommend anyone to go there for their births, the quality of care is second to none!
Irene Shimwell | I support the continuaton of local provision.
Linda McCormick | It would be a terrible loss if these maternity services were closed.

Jenny young | Darley Maternity Unit offers an exceptional and precious service, as a new mother Darley gave me confidence and reassurance and as a mum second time round Darley allowed me the support and time to bond with my baby in those first few days before going home. That is not too mention the obvious, time to recover after an exhausting physical experience. I feel mums, children and families country wide would start from a stronger base, with greater self confidence and better understanding of their baby, if offered the services Darley Maternity Unit can offer.

| 190 | Rachel Furniss | Midwife-led units are vitally important to expectant mums. After the ease of attending pre natal checks and truly fantastic support whilst giving birth at Darley, I would be reticent to have any future babies in hospital.
As the government is actively DISCOURAGING unnecessary travel, surely asking people to travel 25 miles or more for regular check ups and attempt to park at an already over-congested hospital site flies in the face of environmental concerns? |

DR JULIET PEEL | DARLEY MATERNITY UNIT SERVES A RURAL COMMUNITY REALLY WELL AND TEACHES YOUNG WOMEN TO BE MOTHERS IT WOULD BE A TRAGEDY TO LOSE THIS VALUABLE UNIT
Sophie Fairfax | Darley Dale is not just a maternity centre but the heart of our raural community. The governmet first took fox hunting, now its our maternity centre where will it stop. We like being a community a raual one and not part of the cities.
Yvonne matthews | This is a very important service within our area, i can not understand any of the reasons that they are using to try to close this valuble service. I used darley dale with the birth of both my children and found the help the gave me was fantastic. The people trying to close darley do not realise how important this service is to us new mums. Leave darley alone.

Camille Ramshaw | I am a trainee Doula and support the role of birthing units. Nothing against hospitals but shouldn't women have a choice rather than being told what to do?!
Magdalena Vasiliu | The level of maternity services is a disgrace and I am talking from an user's point of view. Reducing them even more is a criminal act towards the mothers and babies that don't receive the right care as in other even less developed countries. How can a pregnant woman that might experience complications travel? Services should be available local and good service rewarded and not punished with closure. Government should look at other ways to save money and not at reducing even more a service that is already poor because of lack of resources. After all why are we paying the highest taxes?

LOUISE COMLEY | HAVING JUST VISITED THIS UNIT FOR THE FIRST TIME RECENTLY I AM DISGUSTED TO HEAR OF THE FACT THAT THIS COULD BE CLOSED. MOTHERS NEED A CARING CALM PLACE AT THIS SPECIAL TIME, NOT THE HUSSLE OF A CENTRALISED HOSPITAL IN A LARGE TOWN.
