Rachel HopkinsonFantastic unit 110% care was given to me and my sons must be kept open to give women a choice.
Sarah WilliamsI WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY BREASTFEED MY SON WITHOUT THE DARLEY DALE MATERNITY UNIT. Due to circumstances i had to have my son at calow but transfered to DDMU the next day. Being a fist time mum i was nervous of breastfeeding but desperately wanted to do it. Without the support of all the excellent midwives and other staff i would have given up breast feeding. i was there for 4 days. That extra day made all the difference to me being able to continue breastfeeding as i had a berivement in the family 2 days after my son was born. I'm happy to say my son is still breast feeding and is * months old. The staff were excellent i can't praise them enough. IF WE ARE ENCOURAGED TO BREASTFEED AND THEN DON'T HAVE THE SUPPORT OF LOCAL MATERNITY UNITS AND MIDWIVES THEN MUMS WILL STRUGGLE TO FEED AND GIVE UP SOONER. PLEASE KEEP THE UNIT OPEN.
Rhys WilliamsThe staff were very helful and friendly to my wife while she was in the DDMU.

AnonymousThe loss of this facility would be a great shame - so many little lives have started in less stressed families than would otherwise be the case.
Nicola PlattsI planned to have my first child at Darley Maternity Unit but unfortunately had to transfer to Chesterfield. I did return to Darley Dale post natally and I am so glad I had this choice. I left the unit feeling confident with breast feeding, changing nappies, bathing my baby etc. etc. I also felt looked after and well fed. I strongly believe that if I had not had the choice of going to Darley I would not felt as confident to ask questions of my midwife when she visited me at home and as a consequence found the first few weeks much more stressful than they were. The consultation document talks about safe and affordable care - what about quality! My next baby is due next week, I have opted for home birth but do not feel I have had a real choice provided to me.
Seb CollinsAn essential part of the community; we will all be the poorer once it has gone
RACHAEL McIlwrickDMU is an invaluable service, it cannot shut!
Debbie DutchUnbelivable-The closure of Darley would be a great loss.I totally disagree with the new plans. WHO SHOULD HAVE THE GREATER SAY-surely local mums and mums to be!!!!!!!
Maria Barnes
David BarnesMy wife gave birth to our first child at Darley Dale in 2005 and the care she received both during and after labour was exceptional. My wife really didn't want to give birth in a hospital and Darley gave her that option. My wife experienced trouble breast feeding at first and the staff at the maternity unit helped her enormously. I do not know whether she would have persevered if it wasn't for their help. PLEASE KEEP DARLEY OPEN!
Ian MorewoodThe proposals to leave the entire of the Dales and Peaks with lesser facilities and fewer midwives is plain stupid especially with the population growth rate that Derbyshire County Council anticipate throughout the area. Also suggest signing the following http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Maternity/
Louise R BrennanThe consultation document produced by Chesterfield hospital is extremely misleading and biased - no option is given other than to agree with the solution proposed by the Trust. The Government is keen to promote choice for expectant mothers, the closure of Darley is a retrograde step and places mother under undue stress and severely limits our choice.

Geoff GeeIt is rediculous that rural communities presently served by the excellent services of the Darley Maternity Unit should have to travel even further across the moors in all weathers to the far side of Chesterfield just on the whim of the bureaucracy in Chesterfield. Medical services should be provided in the community

Eleanor HooperThe support of both my local midwives and Darley Maternity unit were an invaluable support to me throughout my pregnancy and the birth of my son. To be able to spend time at the unit after the birth gave me the confidence to breastfeed successfully,

C S AllenAlthough I have not used this particular service personally, I know many women who have and all say they felt that they received great care and attention and that childbirth made a more enjoyable and positive experience through this
AnonymousGiving birth to my third child at darley dale maternity unit was a very pleasurable experience. In the past I have been to hospitals to have my babies and although I was looked after to a degree, I didnt get the full amount of care I felt I needed. Closing the maternity unit would be terrible for women like me who dont want to go into hospital to have there children or have a home birth, as there are no other maternity units in the area. Keep Darley Dale open!

Hannah ShirleyI had both of my daughters at Darley Maternity Unit, just! Living in a village near by this was the closest place to deliver and i only just made it there both times! If i had had to travel to hospital i would have delivered in the car both times! It was a lovely place and enabled me to breastfeed second time round.

Michele SarginsonPlease reconsider keeping this important facility open.
Karen HolmesI am expecting my first baby in July and would prefer to have the option to have my baby at Whitworth maternity unit with a Midwife that I had known throughout my pregnancy.
Michelle HeadingtonIt is governement policy to move to localise services so the closure of darly goes against this principle. Midwifery led units should be the future of births, pregnancy is not an illness and we should not be encouraged to have babies in hospital Although home births remain an option under the proposals my concern is the cut in midwifes numbers will prevent this from becoming a viable option.

claire millwardThe service at Darley Dale is exceptional. I would pay to go there. My stay there helped me to maintain my breast feeding which I was going to give up on in Derby City as midwifes had no time to help.
Patrick MorrisonI am the father of Fiona born in Darley Dale maternity unit 20/07/03. I would like to say that quite simply the staff, and the environment they all created, for my wife Kerstin, and myself and Fiona was irreplaceable. The care and thoughtfulness was wonderful. I wish that all expectant families could have the same opportunity at such a life changing moment. Yours truly, Patrick Morrison.
Grainne Mc GuinnessThe loss of Darley Dale Maternity Unit would be a tragedy for the many many women and babies who are supported through pregnancy, birth and just as critically during the initial post-natal weeks. My little boy will be one in March. If it had not been for the excellent post-natal care we received from all the staff in the unit and the quick thinking and attention to detail shown by one of the Darley midwives P. Bamford, Jakob would not be here today. His congenital heart defect was not picked up during ante-natal scans nor was it detected during the initial post-natal check in Chesterfield where he was born. With the best will in the world, the same care cannot possibly be given to new mums and their babies under this newly proposed system. I would NOT have recognised the signs of heart failure in Jakob in time. Surely the well-being of our babies and their parents is the priority of the NHS.
