Name: Shane Seibel on Apr 12, 2011Comments: Students attend Emerson College because they trust that their institution will offer them a better education than any other school. Other renowned universities such as NYU have attracted some of the best of our generation by boasting to have hired incredible professors such as Spike Lee. Emerson College now has an opportunity to hire yet another professor with superior knowledge and abilities, which will help spread Emerson's name as well as increase the level of skill of future graduates. Mo Flam has been celebrated as one of Hollywood's best gaffers with screen credits that include Black Swan, The English Patient, Cold Mountain, and I Am Legend. In the last few semesters I've personally known Mo, I can easily say he has been one of the best teachers I've ever had (in 16 years of schooling) and I've learned vast amounts of information from his classes. It would be a shame for the rest of my peers to not have the chance to share this awesome experience. I hope we will see Mo again in the fall, -Shane SeibelFlag

I can honestly say that it is the best class that I have NOT taken at Emerson college. If the school does not do absolutely everything in its power to keep Mo Flam teaching, then my peers and I will be missing out on the most instructive, hands on, inspirational, and creative course that I have ever experienced at Emerson College-- and I'm not even in the class (I just watch it). Johnathan Wacks- you will be doing the entire VMA undergraduate community of Emerson College a disservice by not fighting to keep Mo Flam teaching.Flag

Name: Mike Stay on Apr 12, 2011Comments: Taking Mo's lighting class has been the best class I've taken at Emerson. He is a great teacher without trying to be. It seems like every class with him has exponentially expanded my knowledge of whatever subject he decided to teach. I have immensely enjoyed the experience of his class, we did set-ups and shoots unlike any other class I've taken here at Emerson. I would highly recommend his class for any film students. If there is any way to keep Mo at Emerson I feel that he would a tremendous asset to the film program. Thanks Mike StayFlag

I am taking basics of cinematography and was extremely excited that there was a class being taught by such a respected professional. I am extremely disappointed that after my junior year in college there will be nothing more Emerson can do to train me in cinematography. It is truly a shame.Flag

He was a special guest in my Basic Cinematography class with Frank Coleman the semester before he began teaching here and I am astounded that the faculty is not doing everything in its power to lock him down.Flag

His two workshops he did in class really helped myself, along with fellow classmates, visual what it is a gaffer has to do on set. Without Mo's expertise for those two days, I believe my time in Basic Cinematography would not have been the same.Flag

Name: Corrine Butler on Apr 12, 2011Comments: As someone who has little to no interest in cinematography, it's taken a lot for me to really get in to the intro course. Having Mo Flam come in and show us how to light was a godsend. He's a fantastic person with a great sense of humor who is generally interested in making sure we learn. That could describe most professors though. What sets Mo apart is that he really knows what he's talking about and he is able to show you and set it up fast. Mo got me interested in cinematography and taught me how to do complex and simple set ups efficiently. Calling him "outstanding" and "distinguished" isn't hardly enough. Though I'm not going to be in Boston next semester, I realize that he is an invaluable resource to this school. Emerson, keep Mo Flam. Thank you.Flag

Name: Andrew Hutcheson on Apr 12, 2011Comments: I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to listen to Mo's on-set wisdom during my Basic Cinematography class last year, for which he guest lectured. It was unlike any other guest lecture session I've ever had, as Mo taught specifically on set and with his emphasis on simplistic, practical lighting helped to re-frame my approach towards lighting and appreciation of the soft touch approach. He would be one of the strongest assets at the school, and would hopefully set a precedent for working professionals in the many departments of filmmaking that often get neglected beyond basic and intermediate class levels here at Emerson.Flag

Name: Silas Robinson on Apr 12, 2011Comments: I work at the soundstage, and I had the privilege of sitting in on several of Mo's classes. Mo Flam is a man who has worked in Hollywood for decades doing some of the most difficult lighting in the industry. Take a look at his resume, and you are struck with the number of films he has worked on that have an overpowering visual beauty to them; Cold Mountain, I am Legend, Black Swan, The Talented Mr. Ripley, etc. It would be difficult to find another Gaffer whose understanding of lighting matches Mo's, and nearly impossible to find one who exceeds. During that class, I witnessed Mo explain lighting techniques to a room full of excited students that took him 25 years to figure out. Now that knowledge is as much theirs as it is his. If NYU students can brag that they got to ask Spike Lee how he works with actors, then I can brag that I asked Mo how to make headlights look real. Having Mo Flam at Emerson is a staggering privilege, and the 15 students who got to take his class are amongst the luckiest young cinematographers in the country.Flag

Name: Matt Lowe on Apr 13, 2011Comments: We need Mo at Emerson! Advanced Lighting Workshop is invaluable to Emerson cinematography students and the school needs to do all they can to keep Mo. If that means offering him full time salary and work, they need to do it! Please do not let a great professor with exceptional real world experience slip away. It will be a major loss and blow the department if Emerson decides not to keep Mo. Do the right thing and bring back Advanced Lighting Workshop!Flag
