The M.I.T. Post Office is officially staying open and I am honestly still in shock that this worked out. None of this would have happened if you had not lent your name to this cause when it felt like a long shot. This victory belongs entirely to the community that …
Save the M.I.T. Post Office
The American Postal Workers Union, Boston Metro Area Local 100, would like to speak with you today about the closing of the M.I.T. Post Office.
First, it is important to note that the Postal Service does not rely on tax revenue to perform its operations. In other words, your hard earned dollars do not subsidize Postal Service functions. All the while, we interact with the American Public on a daily basis, providing extraordinary service at a reasonable price.
The Postal Service plans on closing hundreds of Post Offices nationwide including the M.I.T. Post Office. Of course, while we are concerned with protecting our members jobs, we are similarly concerned with the quality of service we provide our nation.
What's most disconcerting is that the M.I.T. Post Office brings in a handsome profit of $201,000+. Apparently, the Service believes they can reduce their costs through these closures and continue to bring in the same revenue. How you might ask--by expecting or rather forcing you the public to use other facilities. Perhaps they should simply state Customer Service is an Inconvenience.
One would think that a management team, which maintains its losing money, would look to promote every office that operates with even the slimmest margin never mind those that provide a generous profit.
We believe this profit of $201k supports our contentions that the M.I.T. Post Office provides a valuable service to the community as well as a respectable profit to the Postal Service and the M.I.T. Post Office should remain open.
Sincerely,
The Petition
I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people have stepped up to support this post office. If you have a moment today could you please post the link to your own social media feed to help us reach our first major milestone.

This makes zero sense. Why close a place that actually makes money?

So they want to close a profitable office? Typical government thinking. Just keep making it harder for everyone.

Ridiculous. Walking all the way to the next office is a major pain for those of us working on campus.
