We don't want the military radar in Madeira!
Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo are the two highest peaks in Madeira Island, at 1800 meters and 1861 meters above sea level respectively. The Government wants to build a radar station in Pico do Areeiro for military purposes. But there are serious doubts about the military usefulness of this facility.
The beginning of the path between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo will be altered to allow the construction of the radar station, which will have an area of 200 to 300 square meters and 27 meters high. All that area will be under military control. Consequently the Pico do Areeiro viewpoint will be displaced as well, so the visitors will lose access to the highest point of the peak, which will be occupied by the radar. Moreover, the radar will produce a continuous noise with harmful effects, which will destroy the silence and quietness of the place. With respect to the radiation emitted, it can be a threat to public health. In this site exists a very fragile ecosystem where species of flora and fauna are unique to the Island and to the world. This should be preserved at all costs
The viewpoint at Pico do Areeiro is one of the most visited places in Madeira Island, due to its impressive beauty, in all kinds of weather � sunny, cloudy, snowy, on moonshine or just under the stars!
We wish to keep our landscape and our quality of life!
We, the undersigned, do not want the military radar in Madeira!
