Name: Meghan Wakeman on Jun 21, 2010Comments: My Certified Nurse Midwife was immeasurably helpful during my last pregnancy. I believe that every woman in NYS has the right to choose what kind of professional assists her with her birth, whether it be an OBGYN, CNM, or homebirth midwife. Supporting reproductive rights and a woman's right to choose also means supporting birth options for women!City: AltamontUS State: New YorkFlag

Name: Ellen Biggers, MD on Jun 21, 2010Comments: I am an Ob/Gyn and physician and Member of the NYS Board of Midwifery since 1998. Midwifery is a separate profession. The current law restricts access and does not have the intended effect of the original law- to create collaboration between MDs and CMs. Malpractice insurance companies raise the rates for Ob who cover homebirths (MLMIC) causing many of the current agreements to be with Family Practitioners and hospitals. There are studies that show the public health benefits of midwives in communities. In Manhatttan, in the Amish country near Canton there are populations without access to midwifery care due to this practice agreement restriction. ACOG's statement that midwifery care without physician supervision is less safe is unfounded. Multiple studies both local and international have proven the direct health benefits of the midwifery model. The reduced healthcare cost to tax payers is also demonstrated. Be diligent, evaluate the evidence, and act accordingly. The answer is obvious.City: SlingerlandsUS State: New YorkFlag

Name: Blair Ellis on Jun 23, 2010Comments: This is both a class and a women's rights issue. Women off all economic statuses should have available all forms of medical treatment that they need to fulfill their own personal needs. Midwifery offers an *inexpensive*, safe, and natural way for women to care for themselves and their children during the prenatal and birthing period & for their everyday gynecological needs.City: BrooklynUS State: New YorkFlag
