Comments: As a mother of two babies born without incident under midwifery care, I ardently support the right of midwives to practice without a written practice agreement. Such agreements limit the practice of midwifery, (a practice much older than obstetrics and gynecology) and thus limit my choices as a woman. Midwifery is a low cost, highly effective model of care that should be promoted, not restricted.

Comments: Women and their families have the right to choose whomever they feel is the best provider for their pregnancy and birth. The Midwifery Modernization Act (S.5007/A.08117) will give mothers greater access to the care providers of their choice.

Comments: As a woman who had a successful home birth, I believe that this alternative should be available for all. That being said, qualified nurse midwives should not have to sign on with a medical doctor, but should be able to practice on their own.

Comments: With the current state of the culture re malpractice suits the MD does not want to sign anything that might entangle or implicate them in a case they may not be involved with. This stops the practice of midwifery right there unless you are employed by a hospital or MD The situation is poorly understood by most people but we need midwives to help restore normalcy to childbirth and to have cost effective care.

Comments: When I have a baby... I want someone with both extensive training AND hands on experience at my birth (midwives!). Stats show that doctors deliver far fewer vaginal births (interns have never even seen one because all they see are c-sections!). Doctors are constrained by hospitals (insurance), midwives are supported by mother nature.
