I think in fairness to ethnicities and religions, if the board wanted to add an extra "day off" it ought to be a type of "personal family day" so that each family could choose the day they wish to have their children home to celebrate any particular holiday, religious observance, etc. I do not feel forcing all kids to stay in school past une 8th to include MKL's birthday as a holiday for all is just or equitable.Flag

As a former teacher myself, I can vouch that that time can definitely be better spent. There are other teacher work days that can accommodate other things if need be to make up from the Early Release agendas.Flag

Name: Barb Fibich & Scott Fink on Jan 10, 2007Comments: The fact that school started on a Friday and is going to end on a Monday is really inconvenient. To add insult to injury, the last day of school has never been one where learning takes place. What about all the snow days we won't be using this year Please reconsider. You are effectively ruining our first summer weekend.Flag

It is not their fault, or anyone's for that matter. It is not fair that the addition of a day comes when we have not even had to have the use of any snow days or anything like that. Why couldn't a decision be made prior to December is besides me. You had Dec 22 as a day in school, then a no day in school. What is going to happen later, 1 day off for snow is going to also add a day at the end of the year Of course not. Will an additional day in school be beneficial to anyone I don't think so since it is going to be a day that more likely many students won't be present as their parents have already made plans to not be in town, or in the state for that matter. Maybe something that should be considered in the future. Once you have set a calendar, see what the consequences would be to EVERYONE involved.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jan 11, 2007Comments: I appreciated December 22nd off with my children. And I respect the nod to honor MLK with a day off from school (however, he'd probably have preferred all children to be IN school in his honor). That said, there are three reasons we should refrain postponing the final day of the school year: (1) we do have days built in to accommodate snow releases, don't we If we were to miss one school day for snow, we wouldn't change the end date for school. Let's mirror that practice here. (2) The last day of school is typically a farewell day at every grade level, save high school when it's an exam day. We have far more students in elementary and middle schools in our district who will not directly benefit from attending school on June 11. (3) Many families, I'm sure, have already planned their summers to begin at the end of the June 8th school day. If maintaining the DPI required contact days is the issue -- to avoid a fine, say -- I can certainly appreciate that consideration. However, this should have been addressed when the initial calendar was created. This isn't rocket science, folks. And we've been doing it a LONG time. It's hard to believe this ball was dropped.Flag

Name: Wendy Grapentine on Jan 11, 2007Comments: These recent changes, in addition to the ridiculous number of CRT and Teacher Work Days, make it very difficult for parents to make arrangments for childcare if both parents work, and make it difficult for the children to get into any sort of weekly routine for the school year. It seems it's the rare week that we have a full five days of class. I understand the need to have time for teacher preparation and training, but please consider streamlining all of these days off. I used to think the Madison School District was crazy for having early release every single Monday. But at least it's predictable and easier to plan for. Thank youFlag
