Florida's newly elected Governor Rick Scott and legislators are purportedly heading into the capital with pencils sharpened and mindsets of cut, cut, cut. While balancing the budget is certainly a goal to be admired, we must remind them that what may appear on the surface to be a quick fix to the deficit, may turn out to be very costly in the end. When the Polk County Sheriff's office has an independent survey done that shows that substance abuse/mental health treatment in the jails gives them a return of seven dollars for every dollar spent, that is something everyone must pay attention to! Money spent on treatment equals tons of money NOT spent on arrests, jail time, court costs, foster care and civil damages, over and over again. At the same time, counties and cities with no available mental health care have hospital emergency rooms packed with indigent people in crisis. Who pays those thousand upon thousands of dollars? You, the hapless taxpayer! So please send a lound and clear message to Mr. Scott and the Florida legislature that penny wise and pound foolish is NOT the way to balance our budget. We will end up paying only a dollar today, but seven tomorrow, and who wants that?
