Name: Betty Weeks on Nov 4, 2002State: ORCountry: USComments: We who enjoy our hobby of metal detecting have an excellent relationship with our state park rangers. We belong to the Adopt a Park program, and knowing funds are low for our stae parks, we gladly spemd time at least 5 times a year picking up trash left by OTHER park visitors. Metal Detecing is a hobby that many misunderstand. We DO NOT leave holes, trash or other evidence of our probing for lost articles We return many valuables each year. We devote time to our younger generation and show them the fun, education and awarness of the history of an area. This is a hobby for all ages, beneficial to all and recommended by Dr's as a great form of excercise for our seniors who have health problems. Sincerely, Betty Weeks, National President, FMDACFlag

Name: Andrew Westmoreland on Nov 5, 2002State: ARCountry: USComments: Many times my family and I avoid camping at our State Parks because we cannot use our detectors there. I've been camping at DeGray Lake EVERY summer since I was a little boy and I've always been disappointed that I could not detect at the State Park. I have noticed many dangerous items over the years on the beaches that I know detectorists would have picked up and thrown away. I try to pick up what I can anyway, but with more volume of people ie: detectorists combing the beaches, I'm sure we could make a noticeable impact on the cleanliness of those areas. Please consider the good that we could do if we partner together on this issue. Thanks for your consideration.Flag

Name: Frank Colletti on Nov 5, 2002State: NYCountry: USComments: Plese reconsider the use of metal detectors in your state parks. Metal detectorists travel and visit many areas, and they are careful to remove all trash and leave the area better than it was before.Flag

Name: Chad Kunce on Nov 5, 2002State: IACountry: USComments: we have the same problem here in the city I live in. The parks commissioner says that the park attendents don't like the metal detectors in the park. But who are they to decide for all. parks commissioner says his hands are tied. I don't think it's right to keep the tax payer's out of the parks.Flag

I plug the tiny holes I make. I drag all the garbage I dig up away. I am an asset to your park not a liability. As a tourist I spend money in your community.Flag

Name: Jimmy McWilliams on Nov 5, 2002State: MDCountry: USComments: Arkansas has many beautiful vacation spots. I have spent many of my vacations in this beautiful state. I will not continue to visit or spend money in Arkansas if they continue enforcing their current metal detecting policy. We who enjoy the hobby of finding objects buried in dirt deserve the right to be allowed to mtal detect on Arkansas State Parks. We leave places much cleaner than we find them cleaning out all junk, glass, sharp metal and nails we find. We fill up all our holes after recovery of buried objects. I ask the great state of Arkansas to please reconsider their policy and vote for change.Flag

Name: Rick Schramm on Nov 5, 2002State: CACountry: USComments: here in california we are allowed to detect in certain areas of our parks. no major digging is allowed, but a small dig and then covered up as neatly as possible. We do community service by assiting our police departments, detecting the playground areas at the parks(some of which are state parks) for foreign objects(razors, nails, etc). Detectorists should be allowed to enjoy their chosen hobby just as others. We do more good in our communities than we do harm in the parks.Flag

I'm a disabled Vietnam vet and understand how narrow this law is as I have fought for this country, and have every right to my hobby in the state parks as do those with other hobbies. This law is discrimination at it's lowest level. Please rethink the logic behind it. Thanks, Alton SulliventFlag
