Name: Thomas Henkey on Nov 14, 2007Comments: As a SLU alumni, I can truthfully state that Professor Meyer was the best educator I had the honor of meeting during my time on campus. With that in mind, I most strongly urge the University to withdraw its current lawsuit.Flag

Name: Dale Sweet on Nov 15, 2007Comments: A&S '97. As former UNews reporter, copy editor and commentator, I respect Dr. Meyer's selfless work with the paper and his students and advisees. After a decade away from SLU, I recently phoned Dr. Meyer (who is on sabbatical this semester), and he returned the call from his office phone almost immediately to schedule an appointment to discuss graduate studies. SLU would do well to develop more professors with Dr. Meyer's traits, dedication and advisory skills.Flag

Name: J. Leland Quarles on Nov 16, 2007Comments: A&S '99. I respectfully urge Saint Louis University, its administration and its Board of Trustees to withdraw the suit against Dr. Avis Meyer. For multiple decades, Dr. Meyer has served as a tremendous asset for the University and its Communications department. He has respectfully served as both a respected adviser and mentor to the campus' students as well as its student journalists affiliated with the campus newspaper. And, to this day, he remains a great guiding light for SLU alums. I am disappointed that the University would even consider taking such action against such a dignified and self-sacrificing campus icon. Please withdraw this suit immediately.Flag

Name: Holly Beretto on Nov 16, 2007Comments: Grad '95. Whoever bids other folks to do right, but gives an evil example by acting the opposite way, is like a foolish weaver who weaves quickly with one hand and unravels the cloth just as quickly with the other, wrote Saint Thomas More. With this cheap, petty vendetta, SLUs message is that the thoughts, ideas and actions of its students and faculty are without value. As a member of the press and a former writer/copy editor for the University News, I am appalled that SLUs administration has brought this suit against one of its finest leaders. The UNews is a vital training ground for the tenants of a free press, free speech and for developing solid journalistic and ethical practices. Dr. Meyer's unflappable example as an advisor, thinker and editor epitomize the Jesuit motto, Ad maiorem Dei gloriam. SLUs assault on his character and integrity is heartbreaking and shameful. I urge SLU to drop this suit against one of its most valuable educators.Flag

Name: Jean Trimble Pietrobono on Nov 16, 2007Comments: Fr. Biondi et al.: What were you thinking I'm managing editor for finance at Consumer Reports and a proud former editor of the U. News (1975-76). Like many fellow SLU grads, I've done well in this field because of the influence of Avis Meyer--his gentle guidance, humor, integrity, dedication, professionalism, big heart, and passion for what's right. Stop this nonsense now, and do whatever it takes to get Professior Meyer back to his position as U. News adviser. Not only are you hurting a dear friend, you're denying current students everything about a SLU education that brought me where I am. Don't damage the national reputation of SLU any further. And don't deny my profession the next generation of real journalists.Flag

Name: Chris Nation on Nov 16, 2007Comments: I don't go to school on the frost campus but I know of the distaste the board of trustees have for this professor because he fought to keep the U news alive and free. This suit is vengeful and the school is looking to do anything they can against him.Flag

Name: Claralyn Bollinger on Nov 16, 2007Comments: This is a ridiculous situation! The SLU administration has tried for years to squash the voice of the student journalists at the University News and now they are taking their dislike for the paper out on Dr. Meyer directly.Flag

Name: Aubrey Krekeler on Nov 18, 2007Comments: To the SLU Administration and Fr. Biondi, SJ: Dr. Meyer has exemplified what real learning is all about in his posts as the UNews advisor, as well as through his role as a teacher. He is passionate about what he teaches and stands for, and while his opinions may not be synonymous with SLU's, they are valid points that need to be considered, respected, and even accepted by a community that advocates care and compassion for all. The malicious tension between the two - Saint Louis University administration and Dr. Meyer - needs to end. It is my hope that the outcome will be just and not a result of petty anger or childish disagreements. Opposition cannot be treated as justification for elimination. It deserves a much higher respect and the opportunity to be discussed and not simply discarded. As a student of SLU, I reiterate the petition above in my plea that this issue can be easily resolved without legal intervention or dismissal of anyone. This institution is about learning and being men and women for others. Let us not, in our anger or annoyance, forget that vital detail. It is, in more ways than one, the duty of this university to exemplify that Christian message. Here is the perfect opportunity to support the message we (many students, faculty, alumni, etc.) are giving you. There will always be conflict within an environment of learning - it is what spawns new ideas and healthy criticism. To merely extinguish a voice of opposition is not in keeping with the essence of knowledge, or the ideals of a Jesuit education like the one supposedly offered at SLU. A higher road needs to be taken in this instance: one of compassion, respect, acceptance, and forgiveness. Sincerely, Aubrey KrekelerFlag

Name: Robert Seefeldt on Nov 18, 2007Comments: Lawrence Biondi's continued churlish and petty harassment of Dr. Avis Meyer is completely uncalled for. As a leader on SLU's campus Dr. Meyer has directly influenced the lives of more students than Mr. Biondi could fathom. Such an action would only only increase the breach between Biondi and the student community.Flag
