Why is it that women cannot play with men? If a women is well qualified to play with a man then why can she not? A couple years ago I remember getting ready to watch the first match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup tournament. As I was watching the game I said that I want to become a soccer player, as any child would say that loves soccer. I thought for a moment and I realized that I can't play because I am girl. I sort of left that thought there and continued on with school. As I grew older I realized that women do play soccer internationally. I then searched up what type of women teams there are. That was when I found out that there was such a thing as the Women's FIFA World Cup and that my own country, Canada, is hosting the tournament in 2015! I was utterly shocked. How could I not know!? Where was all the media? Why weren't there any women soccer players as brand ambassadors? Where was a female soccer player supporting Coca-Cola or Addidas? I couldn't, and many others cannot, name 5 top female soccer players on the top of their heads. The salaries of the top female soccer players are not even 10x close to the top male soccer players. The Women's FIFA World Cup prize is not even 1/4 of the prize of the Men's FIFA World Cup. Or should I just say the "FIFA World cup" as we do not need to gender classify it since something this big and international is obviously set to be played by men. Here's a humble request, why can't we all just play together? The player should be seen from the way they play and nothing else. Some people say that men will be easier on the female players and won’t play properly if that happened. But as human patterns have shown, if a change is made the individual adapts to the change. Not only will this alter the mentality of the male players but will also change the thinking of others perhaps breaking stereotypes and reducing sexism in other issues. By allowing women and men to collaborate, this will bring courage and inspiration in others regardless of how they are biologically. Yes, women have different running capacities than men, but what if we use these good traits and not so good traits of each individual and create a virtually undefeatable team because as they say, one person is not good at everything but they are good at something. If men and women work together to make astonishing technology, build some of the tallest buildings together and even travel to the moon together, why can they not play soccer together? I truly support FIFA and have loved it as long as I can remember. I have hope in FIFA and hope they formulate changes making the motto "FIFA- For the World" hold more meaning and “shine” brighter. Let's support this and say #NoToSexism.
