The Guide to the proposed Basin Plan is an important step towards restoring the health of the Murray-Darling river system. The Basin Plan is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a more sustainable future for the river system. It could make a lasting difference as long as the final plan delivers water flows based on the best available science while supporting diversification of rural and regional communities dependent on the river. It’s not a case of trading off the environment against livelihoods and food production. There will be no long-term future for businesses and communities dependent on the river unless the river system is replenished and made truly sustainable. In drafting the Basin Plan, I ask the Murray Darling Basin Authority to consider: • the 3,000GL scenario will not halt ongoing decline of river health; • the development of additional scenarios for 5,000GL, 6,000GL and 7600GL sustainable diversion limits; • current Federal investment in water buy back and infrastructure efficiencies must be taken into account; • the value of ecosystem services should be included in socio-economic analysis; and • regional renewal and economic diversification needs support. I urge you to support a Basin Plan that addresses the over use of water and returns flows to the Murray-Darling system.
