We, the signers of this petition, respectfully demand that Providence Mayor Angel Taveras comply fully with WPRI-TV Target 12's request to see former Mayor David N. Cicilline's e-mails from 2009 and 2010, a period when the city's finances deteriorated into what Mayor Taveras himself termed a "Category five" fiscal emergency. We are aware that the RI Access to Public Records Act allows, but does NOT require, Mayor Taveras to withhold those records. The Rhode Island Supreme Court ruled in 2004 that a government body can choose to release documents even if the public records law allows them to be kept under wraps. The public has a moral right to know what happened in the government of Providence during the run-up to the on-going fiscal emergency. We live with the repercussions every day. We ask you, Mayor Taveras, as a public servant, to respect the public by releasing this information to us via the reporters at WPRI-TV who made the original request.
