Comments: I was utterly disappointed when I learned that I will no longer be able to rent a home in Maui's upcountry. We are yearly summer visitors and will not return to Maui next summer if this situation is not resolved. If I cannot stay in the Haiku home we have been renting for years we have no reason to return.

Comments: if we hadn't booked our flight (from Toronto) already we'd be going to one of the other 10 million possible destinations in the world - as we don't stay at hotels. If there aren't alot of wonderful villas or perfect B & B's on the beach, we won't be going anywhere near the island. I'm sure most of my friends feel the same way and I'll be the first to mention it to them detailing the problems in Maui. I'll be the one telling them not to go for any reason in the future and the internet is quite the tool for disseminating information these days. We can only vote with our wallet from afar, but regrettably alot of good people will lose their jobs over this silliness. In all my years of travel I've never heard anything so poorly managed, short sighted and stinking of corruption. I hope the pineapple groves come back as the tourist dollars will evaporate to a sliver of the pie now. Just my 2 cents.

Comments: My husband and I always stay at small B&B's or vacation rental homes when we travel. We find it the best way to enjoy a taste of the local life and beauty. We have no interest in staying in large hotel complexes or areas that are completely tourist oriented, where huge hotels are crammed into rows. Please do not remove the option of a natural and more intimate experience on your island. We have recommened the places we have stayed to many people, and all have been excited about the type of settings we have enjoyed. It would be a shame for Maui to loose this appealing option.

Comments: Maui County: What you are doing to the private B/B operators is on the verge of criminal. You are keeping these persons from making a living while filling the pockets of large hotel/condo/resort operators. I've been to Maui four times in the past five years and stayed in a cottage. If your policies do away with these types of businesses, you will do away from my business. I am planning on returning next summer, but I will cross Maui off my list and travel elsewhere if you continue to discriminate against these B/B operators, never to return to the Valley Isle.

Comments: Dear Mayor, Although your motives may be good, the outcome will be anything but pleasant for Maui's economy. Without choice, those of us that do not stay at hotels will simply take our business elsewhere. I'm sure you understand this and have factored that into your thinking. There are more destinations than I could ever hope to see in my lifetime. I'm sorry that Maui won't see me visit again - I'm not and never will be a big hotel person. Maui is a lovely island, but I really have no choice but to vote with my dollars on this issue, go elsewhere for future vacations and voice that choice all my friends and coworkers. I really hope you reconsider your decisions and right this error in judgment. Best regards, Robert McLachlan

Comments: I live on an island that is a tourist destination. Our island started to limited the rental of certain properties to 28 days instead of nightly or weekly rentals. I cannot tell you how that has hurt the economy, not only for the island, but for the owners of small properties. As a frequently traveller I prefer having the choice of location and size of the property I stay at. Please reconsider your regulations carefully, as you may be hurting not helping your beautiful island.

Comments: I am extremely disappointed in the Maui County Planning Director's decisions and plans for eliminating my favorite vacation choice. I consistently choose to stay in small, B&B type, accomodations, and with this decision, I would not visit Maui in the future. I live in a beach city in California, and my husband and I come to Hawaii regularly for vacation. We do not want to stay in a resort or crowded city environment. Please reconsider this action

Comments: In the last fifteen years I have always stayed in Bed & Breakfast inns whenever they are available. The decision has nothing to do with the cost. In fact, I have spent a small fortune on island art, restaurants, and clothing. I have been back to Maui four times in the last ten years and have no desire to ever stay in a cold, large hotel. If that was all that Maui had to offer, I might as well take my vacations in "Miami Beach". My experiences in B&Bs are what have always brought me back. I would seriously look to go elsewhere if these establishments were closed. Please reconsider this absurd proposal. Barry S. Bernstein, attorney

Comments: I have been vacationing on Maui for almost 10 years, and am currently visiting this island (that I love and feel I have a deep connection with), 3 or 4 times a year. The plan to ban vacation rentals would have a significant impact on my future travel plans to the island. As an avid water sports aficionado, I need to be on the north shore of Maui when I come to visit. It's convenient, it is the part of the island that I love the most, and it is where all my Maui friends live as well. The vacation rental industry also allows me to stay in the neighborhoods I prefer to stay in and where I support the local economy (exclusively) through frequenting local restaurants, shops and grocery stores. As everyone is aware, there are no hotels between Kahului and Hana, and very few people, including myself, would want to see one in this predominantly residential area. Staying in a hotel while here on Maui is not my "style" either. If an equitable compromise regarding the vacation rental industry "problem" is not reached, I am worried that I will have to curtail the number of visits and/or find another place to enjoy the activities that are so important to my well being. Sincerely, Ely E. Spivack

Comments: My family has been vacationing on Maui for 13 years, the last 11 staying in vacation rentals in Kuau and Haiku. My husband is a teacher and he and our son usually stay nearly 2 months and windsurf. We patronize local stores and resteraunts, we rent our car from WOrd of Mouth, and I feel our money is best spent locally, versus further enriching large mainland companies. I love Haiku, and I doubt very much that we will return if we are forced to rent a condo in Kihei. Over the years we have made many good friends on Maui, and to not return would feel in a small way like a death in the family. We love Maui, in fact our son is finishing his teaching degree and plans to return to teach there. I feel there has to be some middle ground- regulation, but not elimination of vac rentals.

Comments: Rural B&B not only add character to the Maui experience, as an owner of a time share, they add value to my time share, and significant value to the Maui economy. For example, when I use or rent my one week condo, I encourage my tenant to make a two week vacation out of their travel by staying in B&B and visiting up-land and Hana side of the island before relaxing at my beachside condo. Maui's recent action to tax time shares and drive out B&B makes me wonder if my investment in Maui is worth the added expense of tax on the condo and limitations on where I can enjoy other parts of Maui.

Comments: What a shame. I have visited Maui on several occassions and the best part, by far, has been the ability to stay in the countryside in private cottages. I have been able to experience the "real" Maui and not the commercial side which it seems to be becoming. What a shame! Please leave the small B&B's and cottages as they are. They are a treasure and a pleasure to stay at.

Comments: Banning short term vacation rentals is an invasion of property rights that were granted when property was purchased and the freedom to use their property peacefully. It would be better to consider rental restrictions that owners are required to obtain certain screening (i.e., credit background reports) prior to each rental and be responsible for the rental occupants during their stay, i.e., if renter is not acting within the HOA rules and regulations, the Owner is responsible to end the renter's stay early.

Comments: As someone who is particular about where to stay for a vacation, I prefer to look for accommodations that are authentic, unique, and that make my vacation memorable. My husband and I chose a quiet B&B in upcountry Maui for our honeymoon to give us that "world away" experience we were looking for. Not only did it work better in our budget, we felt more connected with what the island had to offer, and our honeymoon vacation exceeded our expectations. We feel we could not have had the same experience in a commercial resort because we received exclusive service and attention from our hosts. I would hope that the County of Maui would take into consideration the fact that allowing private B&B's to operate will only help the tourism industry by providing alternate modes of accommodations. There will always be families and couples who choose the resorts, but what makes the Hawaiian Islands a special place to visit is that you are literally surrounded in nature. What better experience to give the tourists who visit and boost your economy than to allow them the right to choose to spend their money on accommodations that would place them there The fact that my husband and I were able to have such accommodations influenced us to plan another trip to Maui. I can't imagine going back to the islands and having to be resigned to stay in a hotel or a resort that doesn't meet our idea of a vacation--namely, the feeling that you are truly in a home away from home.

Comments: Recent surveys show an overwhelming majority of residents on Maui support regulation of vacation rentals. This bad decision by the Mayor’s office and in action by the Maui County Council Members is already hurting not only the residents of Maui but also travelers world wide. Homes, jobs and businesses are being lost by the closure of vacation rentals and B&B’s. Tourists are already deciding not to come to Maui as a result of this crisis. Please show some compassion, understanding, and forethought by stopping aggressive, unwarranted enforcement of outdated zoning laws and passing emergency legislation to regulate vacation homes before it’s too late.
