| 3351 | Susan Brandson | Winnipeg, mb canada | I vacationed in Maui in February this year. We stayed in a vacation rental. We had a fantastic experience away from business areas and hotels. When we heard you were closing the small business down we were very upset as we were planning to return in a couple of years. If we cannot stay in a vacation rental home again we will probably not return. Staying in the urban areas we were able to enjoy the natural beauty, privacy and meeting the local families. Shopping in the little business areas. Please don't ruin this opportunity for other people to share such a wonderful experience that we have witnessed first hand. We truly want to return. Please support your people and their livelyhood, by adjusting the zoning regulations instead of closing these small businesses. Thank you for your time and cooperation in this matter. |
| 3352 | Anonymous | West Orange, NJ | When planning our first trip to Hawaii we were looking forward to the romance and privacy of a B&B as well as the ability to enjoy the serenity of the country side and be off the "tourist track". |
| 3353 | Richard Wojcik | Tiburon CA USA | I will stop coming to Maui if TVR's are not allowed. |
| 3354 | Alan Dance | San Jose, CA | I have been a visitor to Maui for several years and a significant part of the attraction has been the availability of TVR accomodation on Maui north shore. This arrangement appears to have significant beneficial impact to the local community in attracting tourist income and supporting local job creation. We have particularly enjoyed friendly relations with neighbours of the TVR premises. Without this facility, my family and I will regrettably turn to alternative venues for our vacations. |
| 3355 | Anonymous | San Francisco, CA | We need to keep the vacation rental option open for visitors. It is good for the local economy. |

| 3357 | Tracey Humphreys | Australia | We rented a gorgeous house on the beach on Maui last year with our best friends. It was the most perfect holiday and we were hoping to meet up with our friends back at the same house in 2009. We are all very disappointed to hear that this may not be an option any longer. |
| 3358 | Lindsey | Los Angeles, CA USA | I am unable to find a place to stay, and am highly considering staying in kauai or the big island instead of maui for our vacation, in spite of having family to visit in maui. Part of the beauty of maui and the islands are the upcountry areas, and the main places to stay there are cottages and bed and breakfasts. We have been hoping to stay in such a place and are sad to see so many lovely looking places closed. This points travelers such as me to kauai and the big island instead of maui. |
| 3359 | David Renner | Los Angeles, CA | |
| 3360 | Wendy A. | Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada | My husband and I are currently in the process of planning our second trip to Hawaii, our first trip to Maui. Last year, we visited the Big Island of Hawaii and Kaua'i and we so happy to find affordable vacation rentals away from the luxurious hotels, resorts and condos. Staying in a vacation home gave us the opportunity to explore different areas of the Islands and feel comfortable about traveling here with a family in the future. We liked being away from the busy hotel areas and the fact that we could afford to stay as long as we did. Most people here think Hawaii is over-the-top expensive, but through our experiences, and staying in vacation homes, we've learned that it doesn't have to be.
We are now starting to regret our decision to stay in Maui during our upcoming vacation with 2 other couples. We've been trying to book accommodations on your Island, but feel like we are caught between the crossfire of local politics. We don't feel welcome, and I'm afraid that if we book accommodations, there is the risk of it being shut down, or we simply won't have the opportunity to stay in an area or place that we want to be. If we were simply looking for a resort experience, we would have flown to Mexico.
While I can understand the intentions of these new regulations, and support limiting the amount of new development, an outright ban seems unreasonable, and makes Maui less inviting than the other islands of Hawaii.
We'll see what happens. |
| 3361 | Judy Taylor | Pittsburgh, PA, USA | When traveling I always prefer Bed and Breakfast or Vacation Rental Homes in neighborhoods. This gives a visitor a sense of living in the place. Hotels and timeshares cannot provide the same sense of living in a place.
For the most part, the folks who prefer the B&B or VRH type of vacationing are considerate, and should a problem be brought to their attention, i.e., late night noise, etc., they are apologetic and remedy the situation immediately.
Please don't ban Vacation Rentals on Mauai. I, for one, will not visit there again, if a hotel or timeshare is my only option. |
| 3362 | george hensler | Sausalito, California | |
| 3363 | Sue R. Park | Duvall, WA, USA | |
| 3364 | James Eaton | Elk Grove Village, IL, Cook County | The vacation rentals in Maui help people enjoy the real Maui. I appreciate all the resorts and hotels have to offer, but in order to really appreciate any place, you need to go where the poepl who live there go, and that is what the vacation rentals bring. Keep them available, as it helps show all of your beautiful island to the world! |
| 3365 | SHERRY HATCH | Nashville, TN USA | Single family dwellings should not be affected by this. This would not create any additional traffic or eco problems. There is only one family staying at a time...just as if someone lived there as their permanent dwelling |
| 3366 | Laurine Septor | Lake Mary Florida | As a former Maui resident I totally favor B&B's and rental homes. I recently visited and stayed in Haiku. It was a wonderful experience and so much better thatn the big resort. It was like I had returned to my home in Kula. I should not be deprived of that experience as a tourist. We stay only in Bed and Breakfasts when we travel all over the workd. Maui should not be an exception! |

| 3368 | Harry Pearce | Manhattan Beach, CA | |
| 3369 | Betty | San Clemente, CA | |
| 3370 | Bob | San Clemente, CA | I enjoy coming to Maui for short term vacation visits and staying in rental condominiums. |
| 3371 | Anonymous | Laguna Niguel, CA | |
| 3372 | Ondar Tarlow | Maui, Hawaii | |
| 3373 | Gail Adair | Maple Valley, WA USA | The NIMBY's have more control over your property than you do. Shouldn't there be a law for them to stay in their own backyard and not try to control others backyards? The world is changing. Tight little neighborhoods of long-time residents is a thing of the past. As long as the vacation renters are abiding by the law, on noise, traffic, etc., why is this such an issue? |
| 3374 | Ron Montemurro | New York, New York, USA | If vacation homes are not available for rental, I will not be travelling to Maui. |
| 3375 | Brenda Brewer | Louisville, Kentucky, USA | This is a viiolation of the homeowner's first amendment right. You have the right to pursue happiness under the constitution, and if the homeowners want to share their homes, so that others can enjoy the wonderful island experience and paradise that they helped create, they should be allowed to do so. |
| 3376 | Rodger D Leach | English, IN, USA | This should be voted on by the citizens of said counties, not regulated by zoning commisions without citizen approval through their vote, yes or no. |
| 3377 | Debra Takara | Denver, Colorado, USA | I was born and raised in Nuuanu, Oahu, Hawaii, and when I visit the Islands I prefer to stay in a vacation rental that is "off the beaten tract". I have always loved the natural beauty of Hawaii and prefer to stay in rural settings on my visits. I do not like congestion and concrete on my retreat holidays. Forcing me to stay in an urban location would result in my not visiting Maui in the future. |
| 3378 | Scott Chreist | Redmond, WA | Regulate, Don't Ban Vacation Rentals in Hawaii! |
| 3379 | Earl Thompson | Tulsa, OK USA | This highly disappointing, we have been coming to maui as a family for years, we have developed many friends in the Lahaina area... which has only one hotel. Vacation rentals are the only way this town will survive. This couldn't be worse timing for Maui residents, with the state of economy here....it will be Maui's death nell. |
| 3380 | Anonymous | Seattle, WA, USA | |
| 3381 | Robert Comstock | Pleasanton, CA, USA | This will also affect Molokai -- a location already hard hit by the Molokai Ranch closure and my favorite spot in Hawaii. Please reconsider this plan of action. Staying in private homes for weekly vacation rentals is by far the best method for me, my wife, and two girls to experience "embedded" travel.
Thanks

| 3382 | Barbara Comstock | Pleasanton, CA, USA | We love Hawaii and come often, but our favorite place to spend time is in Molokai which will also be effected by this proposed legislation. It was in Molokai where we found the Hawaiian spirit, embedded in the community, talking to the folks who have been born and raised here. It is their stories that we share with others on the mainland and always recommend a vacation to the islands.
We decided a long time ago that family vacations need to be authentic and in keeping with local culture and the people. We also found that a kitchen and separate bedrooms ensure happiness all around. It is only through private rentals that all our requirements are met. If the only option were hotels, we wouldn't be able to keep coming to a place we love so much.
I am also concerned for the economy of Molokai, which has a very limited number of hotels (thankfully!) and a quiet kind of tourism. Maui might survive with only its big hotels, I'm not sure Molokai could.
Please maintain the true Hawaiian nature and support the rentals! |
| 3383 | Robert and Brynda Forgas | Bloomington, IN, USA | Several years ago we stayed in a small apartment attached to a house in a residential neighborhood near Kihei. We loved it. I don't think anyone in the neighborhood even knew we were there. Why in the world would you not want travelers staying in private properties rented by the local people? |
| 3384 | Anonymous | New Zealand | |
| 3385 | Sarah Dailey | Atlanta, Georgia US | What a disappointment to have discovered the peacefulness and beauty of Kula, the wonderful, personable landlord who was able to make her restored plantation cottage available for us and the neighbors there who were so sweet and friendly, just to have the place we would have returned to again and again and again removed as a choice for our future vacations. We are not condo and resort type folks, and the cottage in Kula was our idea of heaven. . .now it seems we will be forced to look elsewhere than Maui for vacation and that would definitely be settling for less. Please reconsider the zoning regulations that are now restricting our Maui vacation options. Thank you for your consideration. |
| 3386 | Anonymous | Tiburon, CA US | we used to be regular visitors to Maui, and I am a former resident, when we visit maui we prefer to stay in a vacation rental as opposed to a hotel. |

| 3388 | Carol Soto | California | |
| 3389 | Gold, Gerald & Tomme | Cheyenne, WY U|SA | We have vactioned on Maui for years, maybe not every year, but we love Maui and love to have our choice of where we can stay and enjoy the island. We were previously from Arizona. |
| 3390 | Lori Hieger | Huntington Station, NY | |
| 3391 | Anonymous | Florida | I do not understand why you would want to stop the freedom of choice of where to stay while on Maui. You can not experience Maui, the real Maui without having access to real homes, and small facilities that express the real Maui. |
| 3392 | Sean Corcoran | Portland OR USA | My family and I have not been back to Maui since the County of Maui took steps to ban all vacation rental options outside the "hotel zone". We simply do not want a Hilton or Marriott experience on Maui. We will not return to Maui.
Sincerely;
Sean Corcoran |
| 3393 | Jean Wells | Grafton, Ohio USA | We love Maui, But we don't like staying in large hotels. Vacation rentals are our choice to stay in and hope you do not cause them to diappear on your island. Our experiences with them have been memorable. |
| 3394 | dara caudill | florida | my husband & i have been coming to maui for years. part of the reason we like maui is that we can stay in private homes. we detest hotels & resorts. this year, we tried to book the house that we love, but was unable to due to your new rules. we almost decided to go to another island, when we did find somewhere to stay near to the house we love. if you take the option of renting a private home away from us, we will most definitely vacation elsewhere. maui is beautiful, and we love it, but we can & will find another island that will let allow us to enjoy our vacation away from resorts & hotels. thank you, dara caudill |
| 3395 | Julie Wagman | Potomac, MD 20854 | Maui is a lovely, but expensive, place to visit. Being able to rent a home makes it a viable option for many, including my family, to visit. You will lose a great deal of tourists by banning rentals and B&Bs. For an area that relies heavily on tourist dollars, you are turning away the very hands that feed you. DO NOT BAN SHOR TERM RENTALS AND B&Bs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| 3396 | Raymond Lee | New York, NY, USA | I am so disappointed to hear that the County of Maui is threatening to close down Bed and Breakfasts as well as vacation homes. I ask WHY?! Everywhere else in this country you can rent homes and apartments and the fact that Maui, probably the most place i've been to in the US is threatening the very existence of these types of establishments baffles me. We stayed at Huelo Point Flower Farm and it basically defined our vacation and made it amazing. Please pass regulation to protect these smaller establishments that are a necessity. our vacation wouldn't have been what it was without the Huelo Point Flower Farm. |
| 3397 | Anonymous | DANVILLE,CA, USA | WE LOVE MAUI AND VISIT EVERY YEAR, PLEASE LEAVE THE SMALL RENTALS ALONE , WE ENJOY STAYING AT DIFFERANT PLACE S EACH TIME WE VISIT. IF IT CHANGES WE WOULD GO SOMEWHERE ELSE FOR VACATION! mahalo.. |
