| 3251 | Danielle Zlatich | Post Falls, Idaho USA | My family in Hawaii is directly involved in this situation and they do indeed count on being able to exist as a retreat center and vacation rental property to sustain their way of life. Please reconsider and know that many persons lives, specifically local Hawaiian natives, will be and are affected by this possible ban and shut down of local rentals. My number one question is: why shut down the little man? It is the bigger conglomerates who should be under the micrscope. |
| 3252 | Elaine Johnson | MASSACHUSETTS | I lived in Kona for 13 years and when I return to the islands to visit friends and family, the only places I would consider staying are bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals. Please don't limit my choice.
Mahalo,
Elaine Johnson |

| 3256 | Sandra Enyart | Whitter, California, USA | Please reconsider your decision about closing down the Bed and Breakfast and vacation rentals.
This seems like a very unjust decision.
Thank you |
| 3257 | Steve Enyart | Whittier, California USA | I do not agree with your decision!
Do not do this to these "little" businesses! |
| 3258 | Michele Seibel | Waimanalo, HI, USA | |
| 3259 | Anonymous | Long Beach CA USA | I frequent these B&B's when in Hawaii. It would be a shame for them to disappear! |
| 3260 | Chantel Norris | Long Beach California | This would definatley change my travel plans to your community!!!!!!!
Hmmmmmmmm........ Kaui sounds great! |
| 3261 | Jeremy Michelson | Honolulu, HI | |
| 3262 | Gina La Form | Lomita, Ca, U.S. | |
| 3263 | tulah lane | san francisco, ca. usa | you have to be joking, b&b's are so much more
hawaiian feeling and full of aloha than hotels
DON'T BAN VACATION RENTALS ON MAUI!
you'll lose alot of business!!!!!! |
| 3264 | Rachel Kahakukaalani Elizabeth Jeter | San Pedro, California | I send my prayers and blessings with much aloha and ask prayers from my late parents, Charles Kaloke Pikipuaokahalealii Ogan, a native of Maui, and Rachel Haua Naluai Ogan, a native of the island of Oahu, that they will intervene for our ohana in that the heart of Mayor Tavares will be enlightened to support our ohana and other local Hawai'ians with a favorable decision. |

| 3266 | Anonymous | HI | From someone who grew up on Maui, I think the outlawing of TVR's & B&B is shameful. We cannot bring our families back home because we cannot afford to visit hotels. It's the hotels that are the only recipient of the new laws: it hurts everyone else. I bet you have NO idea how many good people have lost their jobs, or are being foreclosed on because they are too embarrassed to admit to it. We're talking my friends that are window washers, maids, long time owners, not to mention all the mom & pop shops. I hope OAHU is not going to loose all the business similarly. The bad PR this gives Hawaii hurts my heart, hurts the economy of Hawaii, the Aloha and economy that we have relied upon for this last century. Maui's officials have let us down, probably because the Mayor was (I was told long ago) fired by our new Gov when she was on Maui. Is this mistake just an ax to grind, and one that puts money into the pockets of the Big Hotel business's? These are the very ones my families and friends will have to try get a job from now, and the very ones that PAY next to nothing for workers, and with the many thousands of newly unemployed in the marketplace by their & the Maui Officials actions, the mainland hotel industry can pay even less. |
| 3267 | Marisa Traver | Long Beach, CA, USA | |
| 3268 | Swayne Wells | Grafton, Ohio USA | We neither want to or can afford to stay at a luxury hotel. We love to visit you Island and have made many freinds there. Our idea of a vacation is to relax and enjoy the countryside. Please reconsider as I am sure we are not the only one who are dissappointed . |
| 3269 | Clayton Naluai | Honolulu, HI | |
| 3270 | Rafael Ramirez | San Juan, Puerto Rico | I visit the islands every year and always stay with friends, at B&Bs, and small vacation rentals. |
| 3271 | Kent Reed | Australia | As a regular visitor to maui each year it is quite unbelievable what is going on. I bring a group of guys 12-18 every year to Maui and stay on the North Shore. It must have sent people to the wall. What bright sparks are running the council.? Hawaii is known as a holiday destination is`nt it. Such a shame we are not coming this year as Maui is a fantastic place. |
| 3272 | Anonymous | El Dorado Hills, CA USA | Stop hurting the small business people |
| 3273 | Jack Dickerson | Wayne. WV. | The small vacation rentals are one of the reasons my wife and I make return visits to Maui. The quaintness and the lower cost make the visit more affordable.
It saddens me to realize these smaller businesses may not be available for me to stay on future trips. |
| 3274 | David Bresenden | Whittier, CA, USA | Keep the appeal of traditional hawaiian hospitality. There are many tropical paradise areas, but what seperate the islands from all the others is our idea of the hawaiian way of life. |
| 3275 | ACCOLA Daniel Claudio | Switzerland | Dear Mayor and Members of the Council.
I live in Switzerand's most important vacation Resort; in the world's famous St.Moritz. If our region would not allow homeowners to re-finance their investments with a vacation rental. No one would do it! Since we generate up to 35 % the nights spent in St.Moritz with private rentals - this is widely supported by the turist board,
To stop this would have catastrophic impacts on our economy and the tourism itself. I believe that regulation of a market is always the wrong path. The market ALWAYS regulates itself. Basic rules of a prosper and healthy economy! |
| 3276 | Anonymous | Switzerland | I would like to avoid the big crowds and prefer smaller locations and venues for a holiday. |
| 3277 | John k Alden | long beach, washington,USA | i,we cannot come to maui without a "tvr" for 12 people, and we come every year! i guess we will find somewhere else that wants us! |
| 3278 | Sandra Ross | Portland, OR | |
| 3279 | shareen carlson | san diego, ca | It is so sad that you are even considering taking business away from your city. If this happens I guarantee I will not visit Maui in the future. I will also make sure everyone knows that you took away beautiful small businesses instead of nurturing them in the spirit of family and community.
I have a community based website that will be launched nation wide soon and it WILL be one of the articles I write if you do take away the B&B's as well as Retreats.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
I appreciate your consideration. |
| 3280 | Lucy Prouty | Weston, Vermont | |
| 3281 | Andrea Gaba | El Paso Tx USA | My husband and I were married on Maui in 2006. We spent a week in a lovely vacation rental home in Haiku, and are disappointed to learn that there are much fewer options now that we are planning a ruturn trip. I have no interest in staying in a hotel with a bunch of tourists; what we loved about where we stayed was that we were able to experience Maui as it would be if we lived there. We go on vacation to get away from commercialism. Please reconsider this ban. |
| 3282 | Joyce Lucich | Sacramento, CA | Travel every yr. to Maui for a mo. Being there for that length of time and staying with locals, insures that I feel like I belong in Maui. I care for it as my home. This new law not only discriminates against the local owners, it also discrimanates against us loyal Maui visitors who love the island so. |

| 3284 | Anonymous | Keaau, Hi | I find this whole thing absurd not to allow homeowners to rent a room or two in their own homes to vacationers without having to have a permit. I thought we were living in a free country. From what I have heard from friends on the Big Island who tried to apply for a license to rent just one room and call it B&B, they had to go through so much bureaucracy like they intended to build a Hilton hotel. I cannot help but believe that maybe the big hotel lobbies might have a lot to do with closing up the little homeowners, so that everyone is forced to go the hotels. I will not visit Maui until this absurdity is rectified and I will advise all of my friends on the mainland to look for another vacation spot if they intend to stay in a B&B or vacation rental. This is definitely not in the spirit of Aloha and will take a lot of business away from Maui and cause the livelihood of many homeowners. |
| 3285 | Rosemary Hollowell | Keaau, Hi 96749 | It seems to me that people should have a choice when they travel. That includes where they choose to go and where they choose to stay. Many people do not want to stay in hotels. I'm sure that many will choose not to visit a place where the choice is so limited. I for one would rarther stay in a vacation rental or B&B. It seems to me that everything gears towards big business. I for one choose not to visit a place so unfriendly and controled by big business. |
| 3286 | Fran Calvert | Keauu, HI | It's ridiculous to close down small affordable rentals. We Kamaiana need these to afford to visit Maui. Shame on the hotel lobby. |
| 3287 | Genevieve Hartgrove | Calimesa, Ca, USA | |
| 3288 | Anonymous | Santa Fe, NM USA | This is really important to me... I find it a deterrent to visiting if I won't have the opportunity to stay somewhere private, outside of the hotel & business areas. Please adjust this!
Thank you! |
| 3289 | Jeanette Fee | Crookston , Mn. U.S.A. | We want to visit but we do not want to stay at a hotel. We want to experience the solitude of the islands without the commercial aspect. We want to be able to go to a place where a group of us can just enjoy "living" on the island and enjoying all that you have to offer us. We are not party animals. We want to enjoy the migration of the whales, snorkeling, and relaxing on your beaches!! We will not stay up late at night and disturb the locals. We just want to be able to spend our time together as a group in one location. And as a group of 12 people, we can not find a place where we can all stay as a group in one location. Yes, in a hotel, but not in a quaint location of a home or condo. We don't want to have to wake up to kids running up and down the hall, or wake to the smell of breakfast being served in the lobby of the hotel. We want to wake to the sounds of the beach--the waves breaking, and the birds singing. Or maybe no noise at all!!
Please let us enjoy the beauty, the serenity and the natural beauty of the island, without having to endure the tourismn aspect of the islands. Please take this into consideration. |
| 3290 | Cindy Carroll | Hawaii, USA | I think this is a shame, we need to change the mayor and get someone in who knows what they are doing. I put down USA, but sometimes I wonder if we really are in a forgien country with no rights for the people! |
| 3291 | Richard Mapes | Jenison, Michigan, USA | When I vacation I prefer to stay in smaller cottages and vacation rentals. I enjoy the privacy and relaxation of getting away from the busy-ness and commercialism and just enjoy my time, peacefully in the countryside. We are part of a free country and taking away the small business opportunities is a killer to any economy as well as against our American culture and way of life. Our dads, moms, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters fought and continue to fight for our freedoms. Do not throw away or disregard their actions and sacrifices in the name of big business or anything!! If Maui does not support vacation rentals, cottages or small business, I will not support Maui and will plan NO future trips to Maui. |
| 3292 | gabriel Galluccio | Los Angeles, CA, USA | It doesn't make sense to stop an offer that has a strong demand. Some people only come to Maui to escape from the "packaged deals" Finding a home away from home is so unique... |

| 3294 | Abbie Jordan | Portland, Oregon | |
| 3295 | Mary Anne Hack | Leitchfield, Kentucky USA | My husband and I are planning a trip to Maui this summer and were looking forward to staying in the Hamoa Oceanfront Cottage. Now we are uncertain where we will spend our 30th wedding anniversary, because we were hoping to stay in a more secluded private location of the island. I hope the county of Maui will continue to support its residents by permitting them to not close down vacation rentals. |
| 3296 | Anonymous | Canada | I am planning my 30th birthday in Maui in 2009. I sincerely hope that this issue will be resolved. Any travel I undertake considers the environmental impact I am making and seeks to make local connections; to broaden my horizons and those of my hosts. What a shame that you would take away the pleasure of learning to love Hawaii through Hawaiian's themselves. Please consider that a resort is not a one-stop-shop for vacationers and nor do all of us want them to be!
Please reconsider your position and policy... and soon. |
| 3297 | Robert Heddle | Kirkland, WA, USA | I love coming to Maui and staying in small independent places. Please preserve my freedom to do so.
Thanks,
Bob. |
| 3298 | Vanessa Kraus | Columbia, SC, USA | My husband and I had the pleasure of getting married in Maui in 2004. We were in the process of starting to plan a five year anniversary trip for this next year when I have come across this horrible information. We were very much looking forward to staying at a secluded vacation rental home and now we are very concerned that we will not be able to have the type of vacation we had been looking forward to for almost five years now. I am not sure at this point if Maui will be our destination for our five year aniversary. We may find another destination to celebrate where we are not told how we should enjoy the culture. This is from a person who thought the beauty and simplicity of Maui made it one of the most majical places on earth. I am extremely disapointed. |
