It has come to my attention that the University of Calgary offers a course based masters in Geology and Geophysics. This may be a good idea for the University to cater to the professional crowd, traditional students enrolled in the thesis based masters need to protect what we have worked for. What I mean by this is that the University does not distinguish between a course based masters and thesis based masters. Both result in a degree with a Masters of Science in Geology or Geophysics. 

In the Engineering department, a course based masters is distinguished by a Masters of Engineering label. Given that Geosciences department does not offer many grad level courses (most courses are simply masked undergrad courses), it is my belief that the course based masters should be renamed to a Masters of Geoscience.   

Since the degrees are not distinguished from one another, this is unfair to those of us who have undertaken a thesis based masters, and misleading to potential employers of our grads.
