Name: Janice Harper on Aug 6, 2010Comments: The issues presented in this case raise serious doubts about the objectivity of the tenure review Dr. Ramlal-Nankoe received. Like so many comparable cases in the academy, ideals of social justice, fairness and due process stop at the gates to the ivory tower. The road ahead for those denied tenure and subsequently smeared by colleagues and administrators competing for power and position is a rough one. Let us extend to our colleague both our support and our respect for the spears and barbs she has and will endure.Flag

Name: Kay Austen, Ph.D. on Aug 6, 2010Comments: I have been advising plaintiffs in academe for over twenty years. This is one of the most egregious cases of tenure denial that I have ever seen. Why? Because before finally denying her tenure, Ithaca College employed Dr. Ramlal-Nankoe for 12 years--six years beyond the AAUP/academe mandated tenure- or- out deadline. The six-year rule was implemented precisely to prevent just the kind of exploitation and abuse in this case. There is also overwhelming evidence of gender, religious, and racial discrimination against a professor who has written more than all her peers--and supreriors in the department--combined.Flag

Name: Charity Hirsch on Aug 9, 2010Comments: I have been active in academic feminism since 1989 when I helped start The Support Committee for Jenny Harrison, and I continue active with WAGE, an academic feminist group in California. Margo Ramlal-Nankoe has been discriminated against for being a woman, a racial minority, and for her political activity. Ithaca College excuses denying her tenure because her teaching isn't good enough - a claim they make after having her teach their students for 12 years! If her teaching were truly the issue, Ithaca College has abused their students for 12 years. Unfortunately, her fight is very expensive, as well as emotionally draining. She needs all of our help.Flag
