This summer a petition is circulating in the City of Manassas to place a referendum on the ballot asking whether to move our local elections from May to November.
Why? Because, just like in most other Virginia towns and cities, many people in Manassas believe that holding local elections in November makes a lot more sense than holding them in May, by:
  • Saving tax money;
  • Streamlining government;
  • Saving you time;
  • Increasing voter participation;
  • Raising awareness of our local candidates; and
  • Making local government more responsive.

All counties in the Commonwealth of Virginia hold their local elections in November, as do most cities and towns. But, out of a total of 39 cities in Virginia, Manassas is one of only two state-wide that still hold partisan local elections in May.
  • November elections save local tax money, because the state already pays for November elections, but the City has to pay for its extra May elections.
  • November elections streamline government and increase efficiency, by reducing costs and consolidating the process of holding elections.
  • November elections save your time and contribute to better quality of life, because having one election instead of two makes time for other things, like family and home.
  • November elections increase voter participation at the local level, because very few people show up to vote in the extra May elections.
  • November elections can make Manassas better, because increased voter participation helps make local politicians more accountable to citizens.
Let Manassas voters decide if local elections should be in November instead of May!
