The Yearling and Lookout trails in Malibu Creek State Park have been closed to bicycles for more than 20 years. These trails provide connectivity for cyclists from Malibu Creek State Park and Paramount Ranch, and have been deemed suitable for a change in use by an extensive California State Parks Change In Use process and on-site evaluation. We need to show the State that as cyclists, we support the change to multi-use, allowing cyclists the connectivity and expanded singletrack access in Malibu Creek State Park.
Update March 3, 2011: The meeting was held last night and signatures were presented to the State Parks. Thanks for the support so far! However, the petition will remain open. Further public hearings will take place as the State moves through the Change In Use process.
ALLOW ACCESS TO TRAILS CLOSED TO BICYCLES
We the undersigned support the California Department of Parks and Recreation’s (CDPR) recommended Change in Use (CIU) to allow bicycles to be ridden on the Yearling and Lookout Trails in Malibu Creek State Park. We appreciate the efforts of the Angeles District which determined through an extensive Change In Trail Use Survey that bicycles be allowed on these trails.
Mountain bicyclists requested this change of use to create off-pavement access from the Paramount Ranch area near the northwestern boundary of Malibu Creek State. This enhances bicycling opportunities and will provide better visitor circulation and a more enjoyable park experience.
Mountain bicycling is a safe, sustainable, health promoting activity that is a legitimate and appropriate use of trails in our parks. Surveys estimate that more than 40% of trail users are bicyclists, but there is still a very small percentage of singletrack trails available to us.
We support the Change of Use Process and the decision to open these trails.
