Halt Shoot to Kill Order on Tigers

The Honorable Dato’ Seri Law Hieng Ding:

We are extremely saddened to learn of the recent tragic loss of human life and of those injured by reported tiger attacks in Jeli district in the northeastern state of Kelantan. As families and friends mourn, it is understandable that the communities' grievances turn towards a quick misdirected solution.

We are deeply disturbed to learn that Kelantan officials have issued a ‘shoot to kill order’ on wild tigers, stating that this internationally recognized endangered species was "better off dead." This order to kill all wild tigers is said to involve a two-month large-scale operation with the solicited assistance of the Malaysian Army.

We are signing this petition to protest this development and;
· urge Malaysian federal and Kelantan state authorities to immediately suspend any such illegal actions taken against wild tigers in Jeli and in all other areas of Kelantan,
· call upon the Malaysian federal and Kelantan state authorities to ensure the world conservation community that the Indochinese tiger throughout Malaysia remains designated a completely protected species under the Malaysian Protection of Wildlife Act,
· strongly urge authorities to ensure that the local people, all forest and wildlife resources, and all of Malaysia’s natural heritage are equally protected.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter.
