More Malaria Research

This is a call for additional resources to be directed
for Malaria research. Although almost eliminated in
the United States, Malaria is a major public health
hazard in the developing world. However, like many
so-called Third World diseases, it has suffered from a
serious lack of funding and interest in the West.
Indeed, between 1975 and 1997, only 1 percent of drugs
developed by multinational pharmaceutical companies
were designed for such Third World, or tropical,
diseases. According to an article in The Nation,
of the twenty-four biggest drug companies not one has an
in-house research program for malaria, and only two "expressed
even minimal interest in primary research on the disease."
The drug industry's logic, as the author of that article
writes, is clear: "One old, fat, bald, fungus-ridden
rich man who can't get it up counts for more than half
a billion people who are vulnerable to malaria but too
poor to buy the remedies they need."

If you disagree with this logic, if you believe that
additional resources should be directed at one of the
planet's biggest killers, please sign this petition,
which will be sent to heads of leading pharmaceutical
companies.
