Did you know that May is recognized nationally as Lupus Awareness month? The Lupus Foundation of America estimates that 1.5 million Americans, and at least five million people worldwide, have a form of lupus. Although lupus can strike men and women of all ages, 90 percent of individuals diagnosed with the disease are women. Most people will develop lupus between the ages of 15-44. Lupus is also two to three times more prevalent among women of color -- African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders -- than among Caucasian women. Seeing as the city of Atlanta is comprised of 64.5% minority residents and 50.2% are female, lupus impacts a large swath of that demographic, including local entrepreneurs, celebrities, mothers, sisters, children, aunts, grandmothers and the fathers brothers and sons who love them. One such person of considerable influence in Atlanta and beyond is Michael Keith, who has partnered with the Lupus Foundation of America as a national spokesperson. Michael, (affectionately known as "Princey") is a columnist, singer-songwriter, musician, entrepreneur, philanthropist, lupus awareness advocate, and founding member of R&B supergroup 112. He utilizes these platforms to share the message of being proactive about Lupus worldwide. It is especially important to Michael as an Atlanta native, that his beloved hometown would stand with him in his endeavors, as the impacts of lupus are copious and devastating. We are starting this petition to request that the city of Atlanta recognize and designate the month of May as Lupus Awareness Month. Bringing attention and awareness to this debilitating disease is the only way to bring about knowledge and eventually a cure. Will you sign and join Michael in the fight to eradicate this cruel mystery?
