The government has announced that London will be allowed one Enterprise Zone to be chosen by the Mayor. Sadly Croydon's economic prospects have deteriorated and 1,200 local public sector jobs are going which will impact on the private sector. Croydon’s economy has suffered ever since the local power to set the business rate that was removed. An Enterprise Zone would give Croydon control over its own prospects and its own business rate. A run down town centre could be boosted by superfast broadband, lower taxes and low levels of regulation and planning" although the latter may not be universally popular with residents. The government's 'Plan for growth' says: "Businesses occupying the 21 new Enterprise Zones (EZs) will benefit from: a 100 per cent business rate discount worth up to £275,000 over a five year period." This would all boost much needed jobs in Croydon.
