Objective: Make TIME spent in Canada before becoming a Permanent Resident count towards Canadian Citizenship

Overview

International Students come to Canada on study permits, spend many tens of thousands of dollars in Canada, then work in Canada, pay taxes and contribute to the Canadian economy.
Yet it is so very difficult for us to become Permanent Residents of Canada and now with the NEW PROPOSED CHANGES to the Citizenship Act, we will need FOUR MORE years to become Citizens after becoming Permanent Residents.

Costs to be an International Student in Canada

1. Tuition - $20 000 - $35 000/ year
2. Living, food and other costs - $12 000 -$20 000 /year

Total costs per year - $32 000 - $55 000/ year
Average years to complete Undergraduate - 3.5 yrs
Average years to complete Masters - 2 yrs

Total costs to complete Undergraduate - $112 000 - $192 500
Total costs to complete Masters - $64000 - $110 000

How we contribute to Canada

1. We spend on average $64 000 to $192 500 as students
2. We acquire the skills needed for the Canadian workplace, get jobs, start businesses and pay taxes - millions of dollars added to the Canadian GDP
3. We understand the Canadian culture, language, values and have local friends
4. We help attract tourism to Canada since our friends, relatives and family visit Canada during our stay here - millions of dollars added to the local economy

How long do International students have to wait before becoming Permanent Residents of Canada
- On average between 5 years to 8 years

How long do International students have to wait before becoming Citizens of Canada
- On average between 9 years to 12 years

What do we get in return

1. Thousands of dollars spent on study permit, work permit, off campus work permit, visit visa and then Permanent Resident visa applications
2. Very many years of processing time for Permanent Resident applications
3. Not enough recognition for the several years spent in Canada before becoming a Permanent Resident
4. With the new proposed changes, one year more to become a Canadian Citizen.

Please sign this petition and let the 5 - 8 years spent in Canada by an International Student count towards the time needed to become a Canadian Citizen!!!
