The Shelby County Commission denied a request by Sheriff Chris Curry to provide the necessary funding for a Shelby County Sheriff Deputy at every school in Shelby County in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting that occurred on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut. In spite of the denial Sheriff Chris Curry worked with his staff and officers to put a plan in place to keep our children safe to the best of their ability. The Sheriff has also been denied approval by the Commission to replace six sworn officers due to retirement, resignation and military service, which has placed further stress on his department as they seek to respond to the urgent need to protect the students and faculty of the Shelby County School system.
On Tuesday, February 12, 2013 an incident occurred at Chelsea Middle School where a gunman held students at gunpoint against their will. This should serve as a wake up call to the elected officials and residents of Shelby County Alabama to the realty that our students are indeed in danger. Please sign the petition showing your support for our elected officials working together to provide a solution for situation.
