Mr. Chan Heng Kee (Chief Executive Of WDA)

Dear Mr. Lee, Dr. Ng, Mr. Chan & Mr. Chan,

We are deplored with an email that was sent out by Ngee Ann Polytechnic CET acadamy Tuesday, May 10, 2011 5:28 PM  in regards to the sudden reduction in SPURS funding, not too long after election.

Previously, SPURS was funding 90% of our school fees. But a sudden email announcement appalled us - we will now have to pay an additional 20% more school fees (For Singaporeans) & 30% more (For PRs)!

Our neighbour - current SIM Diploma course students are not affected by the post-SPUR funding scheme. Only new students who are going to sign up for courses will be affected by the new post-SPUR funding scheme. So why can't Ngee Ann Polytechnic maintain SPUR fundings for existing students like our neighbour?

Why should Ngee Ann Polytechnic be any different?

We had signed up for the course with initial plans and acceptance of the old-SPUR funding scheme, shouldn't we be covered under that even though SPUR is changing their policy?

In May 1973, about 12,000 officers in the civil service were given the option to convert from the pension scheme to CPF.

The veteran civil servants who had signed up to join civil service under a pension scheme left behind by the British govt have a choice to opt for the pension scheme which they had signed up for in the first place. Thus, why shouldn't existing Ngee Ann Polytechnic students be allowed to have the choice to maintain on the old-SPUR fundings scheme which is exactly what we had signed up for in the first place?

Our government had been emphasizing on the need for Singapore workforce to remain competitive and contribute to stronger economic growth for Singapore. As Mr. Lee had said "Singapore's overriding priority is to improve the lives of its citizens, amid a volatile external environment. The Government's objective is to raise incomes across all levels of the income spectrum entails upgrading productivity and not mere expansion of the economy."  We believe that WDA and SPURS was set up with the purpose to assist in development of Singapore workforce and had been supportive in this intiative.

Thus, we sincerely hope that you can reconsider your decision to impose the new SPUR fundings to existing Ngee Ann Polytechnic Students.

We thank you for listening to our views.
