The resignation of Angela Burt-Murray as editor-in-chief of Essence magazine has been brought to our attention. As you approach the search for Burt-Murray’s replacement, we hope that you will consider an individual who fulfills Essence’s motto “Where Black Women Come First”. Throughout her career, Michaela Angela Davis has demonstrated a genuine love and commitment to the audience Essence serves. Her exemplary vision for African American women has edified the lives of Vibe, Honey, and Essence readers in addition to the numerous mentees she nurtures in her personal life. The editor-in-chief position is particularly meaningful because Essence is more than a magazine. Since 1968, it has been a source of inspiration, enlightenment, and hope for black women. We the undersigned believe Davis’ passion for the empowerment of African American women is what Essence needs in order to remain strong and successful.
