Comments: It seems to be a bit late to start a petition, but the Mabel Memorial Chapel is still standing and as the old saying goes, "better late than never." I started this petition, and wrote the statement above, in response to a plea from a preservationist friend of mine who owns land around the area on Reservoir Street where the Chapel stands. Our hopes are to keep the chapel and surrounding cemetary intact so that the needs of the parishoners continue to be met. If you know of anyone else with interest in this project, please send them this link. They may also send letters of support to: Save Mabel Memorial Chapel C/O Mrs. Helen Foley, Council Member 712 Ridgeville Lane Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801 The Chapel requires apporximately $45,000 in repairs to continue to operate safely. Should you wish to make a small contribution, please indicate whether it should go toward repairing the bell tower and roof, or whether it should be included as an Easter Offering. While any contribution would be gladly accepted, a brief letter of support would mean much more to the congregation as they struggle to keep save the Chapel from the wrecking ball. Thank you!

Comments: While the congregation of Mabel Memorial may not be rich, the Chapel is indeed rich in national and local history. The Daily News Record article was extremely inaccurate and did not represent the position of the Mabel Memorial Chapel congregation honestly. Anybody who would even consider demolishing this beautiful Chapel is not only extremely ignorant, but also unbelievably shallow. I called the Mayor of Harrisonburg on 30 March; he does not support the eviction of the elderly congregation nor the planned demolition of the Chapel. The Mabel Memorial Chapel has had very powerful connections and friends in New York City since the turn of the 19th Century and the time of Boss Tweed, not to mention a history of friendships in the U.S. Congress starting with New York Congressman Willian Sulzer (1909) to the current Senator from Virginia. I think the Board of 1st Presbyterian will have a number of surprizes that will begin just prior to Good Friday. Better not stand to close to C.S. because there may be some lightning bolts from heaven above on Easter Sunday. Have any plans for 6 April folks 7 April Come on over and have some fresh strawberries covered in chocolate. Don't forget to RSVP......limited parking and please make a generous donation to improve the bell tower and chapel roof. Send your tax deductable donations to: Mabel Memorial Chapel- Bell Tower and Roof Drive C/O Helen Foley 712 Ridgeville Lane Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801 or call 1-877-50MARCH TOLL FREE for information on how to make a corporate contribution of building materials, labor, or other items/services of value. Comments: No question in my mind that Harrisonburg needs to preserve all the heritage it can with the massive amounts of expansion its been doing. If everyone wants to keep the small town feel...building a shopping outlet every block isn't going to help.

Comments: No question in my mind that if Harrisonburg wants to keep its small town feel, its need to do everything it can to preserve its historical landmarks. Destroying this church would be a HUGE mistake.

Comments: To have to sign a petition to save a piece of history in Rockingham County is ridiculous. This issue should have never been broughten up. Its places like the Mabel Memorial Chapel that make Harrisonburg wonderfully unique!

Comments: This is a great piece of local history and once beautiful building that should be restored to its original state. My kids have spent more than a few Easter Sundays hunting eggs on the grounds surrounding Mabel Memorial. It would be an awful thing to see townhouses, retail outlets, etc. take the place of such a huge part of the local history.
