Name: Maggie Wolters on Jan 18, 2007Comments: I have lived in this area for six years and travel M-40 everyday. This location is not safe and it is about time that something is done about it. I too have a four year old and we travel that area a lot. We have adjusted our driving to fit the truck drivers, but that isn't always enough. I too am furious by this lose. Please, take this petition seriously and come up with a solution quickly. Thank You, Maggie Another concerned motoristFlag

Name: Timothy K Boeve on Jan 18, 2007Comments: M-40 is our main road into town. We only live approx. 1-2 miles south of the truck stop and have seen many people having to put on the brakes because a semi has cut in front of them in order to get out of the truck stop. It is a hazardous area and something has to be done. It is sad that it took 3 peoples death to have the public take notice of this dangerous area.Flag

Its kinda sad that I make my wife call me when she gets to work just for that beacause of the truck stops so i think a stop light is the best idea.Flag

Name: Lorinda Ann Emelander on Jan 18, 2007Comments: My husband and/or I have traveled M40 daily for over 30 years right past the truck stop to Haworth were we both worked. We lived on M40 from 1974 to 1985 before moving around the corner from the Truck Stop on 52nd St. during1985-1997. We moved back to M40 in 1997 through 2007. I am very familiar with M40 and the traffic flow, congestion, and "area's", to be careful at. We have seen many accidents in this area, not to mention the amount of times we have seen extremely close calls, for both the semi drivers and vehicles. If you live in this area you are well aware of the unspoken rule to "Let the semi drivers out," intentionally slowing down to help them out, and try to prevent accidents from happening because you know "they need to get out," and they are going to pull out anyway. This stretch on M40 starting a 52nd St. North to Haworth where the Waverly extension comes into M40, the 196 and M40 on/off ramp area, in front of the Truck Stop, and the section by the New Strip Mall just south of there, is congested and dangerous. If you total the accidents that have happen at each of these locations since the growth of this area over the past 5-10 years, including by Mc Donalds, you will find this "stretch" if a studied is conducted and totaled at each area, to have one of the highest accident rating in the State of MI. As this area continues to grow with industry and sub-developments a long range plan needs to be considered that will minimize the danger of semi's pulling out of the truck stop in front of vehicles, and slow these vehicles down that are traveling at 55 and also rushing to make it to work on time or to get out of work and get home.Flag

Name: Laurie Sterenberg on Jan 18, 2007Comments: I would like to say that most folks in Hamilton, where we live and travel M-40 alot, have had to slam on the brakes for semi's. I have blown my horn at them before also to let them know how close it was to an accident. Many people have said that nothing will be done until something tragic happens there - now that it has it still takes alot to get something accomplished. I would like to state that rarely are there police there giving tickets to the semis for pulling out in front of people - there must be a law against that.Flag

Name: Wm. Vining on Jan 18, 2007Comments: I would like to see a stop light put in this area if at all possible. You can't place all the blame on the trucks pulling out of the truckstop though, as they're just trying to get out of the parking lot and with the VERY high traffic on M-40, it's almost impossible.Flag

Name: Kenneth J Weiss on Jan 18, 2007Comments: I too drive this route every day from and to Allegan. Not to fault the truck drivers but to get out of the truck stop I feel its necssary for them to pull out while cars are coming within an unsafe distance. Instead of just simply putting in a traffic signal or lowering the speed limit; I feel that reconstruction is necessary of Tulip City truck stop. All truck and car traffic should be rerouted via a new road from the back or side to the intersection just southeast of 196. Having all traffic at the intersection along with a traffic signal is a true fix to the unsafe condition that currently exists. No entry/exit other than using a new main entrace should be allowed. Just to note: since the reconstuction of M40 2 years ago that wided the road; I belive that people actually drive faster in this area. Please fix this problem!! Thank you!Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jan 18, 2007Comments: After driving from Holland to Allegan every day for over 4 years, I can attest to that stretch of M40 being very dangerous. It was multiple times a week that I would have to slow down quickly after a semi truck pulled out in front of me from the truck stop. I thought many times that someone was going to get hurt and now, unfortunately three people have lost their lives. I ask that a change to that intersection is taken into consideration.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jan 18, 2007Comments: Lowering the speed limit would greatly improve the safety of M-40 near the Tulip City Truck Stop. I travel this stretch daily, and live very near it. With the high volume of trucks coming and going at the T.S., I just don't see how a traffic light would improve anything. It would back up traffic (higher rear end accidents) and line up the trucks at the T.S, (higher rate of running through yellows) Something to consider. Possibly a blinking caution and a lower speed limit would be the answer... Either way...it stands unsafe the way it currently is. Obviously.Flag
