***PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION IF YOU\'D LIKE FOR JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL STUDIES TO BE OFFERED AT LAWRENCE TECH!*** This petition will be given to the school administration as proof of interest in Japanese courses. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Japanese has become an important language in engineering, architecture, computer science, and business. Increasing numbers of American companies conduct business in Japan, and many Japanese companies have expanded their activities in the United States. These companies need professionals who can read and communicate in both English and Japanese. I\'m proposing a minor in Japanese Language and Cultural Studies to address this need. The minor will be specifically geared toward students in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Architecture, and Business, but any student may apply. The courses will help undergraduate students gain conversational and written skills in colloquial Japanese, reading and translation skills in technical Japanese, and an understanding of Japanese culture. Without language instruction, we run the risk of becoming narrowly educated, lacking sufficient understanding to be able to move upward in a highly competitive global market. With technical fields becoming increasingly globalized, it is absolutely necessary that LTU graduates have a greater familiarity with the languages and cultures of countries with whom the United States partners and competes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By signing this petition you are affirming your support of a Japanese Language and Cultural Studies minor at Lawrence Technological University.
