Comments: Raising rent for graduate students in order to solve a "housing problem" is like proposing tax cuts during a budget crisis...it will make things worse than they already are. Graduate student housing will be unaffordable to those who need it. Graduate students will be unable to survive at UC Irvine. This is not a good idea, especially if UCI wants to continue to promote itself as a top research university. UCI needs its graduate students, do not be so foolish as to price us out of a rental market designed to accomodate our very low stipends. Raise the the cost of living too much and UCI will lose a considerable number of graduate students and the skills we contribute. On the other hand if our stipends are raised proportionate to the rent increase I see no problem...I certainly would not mind being payed $4000+/month for the time I give to the university.

Comments: Yes, I feel that the students shouldn't pay for all the inordinate fees that are tallied by the university. Especially since we are NOT seeing any new services rendered.

Comments: The sharp rent increase will certainly make UCI less attactive. With the same salary and more rent, the quality of life will be greatly degraded.

Comments: If Palo Verde had aged water heaters that are constantly under repair and asbestos in the ceiling, then I could understand the rent in the two communities being the same. However, equating Verano Place and Palo Verde is like equating apples and oranges. I ask the administration to evaluate if the two communities really are on par and to that end justify why they can charge the same rent in the two communities.
