We are students from the University of Connecticut who are dissatisfied with the rising costs of our education. Not only are these costs continuing to go up, we are not being informed as to why. It is ambiguous as to where all of our money is ending up. A college education is becoming increasingly important to employers looking to hire. However, as tuition increases, many people are unable to afford a higher education. As a result, this limits their opportunities to pursue their desired career path. Even those who do attend college usually have to take out large loans to cover tuition. This leaves graduates in immense debt that can take many years to pay off. At the very least, if costs are to increase, students should be informed as to how their money is being used. If we are told where our tuition increase is going, we as students can then decide whether or not this is a proper use of our money. If we feel it is not, then we can easily advocate our dissatisfaction and bring this to the attention of our school officials. We propose that the school officials outline where students’ tuition is allocated and make this outline easily accessible to all students. This will restore the confidence of the students in the administration. Additionally, we oppose any further increases in tuition until the school displays financial transparency. Our country is built upon the principle that everyone has equal opportunity, yet our higher education system does not adequately represent this. It’s simple, if you want to go to college, you should be able to go to college. Sign our petition. Together, we can make a change.
