Waters that have historically been open to public use are increasingly being gated off, making it more difficult of access productive fishing waters. It’s time to stand up and fight to protect our right to recreationally fish canals connected to public navigable waters. Only when our political representatives hear from us and understand the vast economic impact our sport has on the state treasury will they listen. So you’re help is needed. Just sign this petition asking for legislation to address this problem, and be ready to make calls and send emails as we organize to fight the closing of vast areas of our fisheries.

Seeing this level of support reminds me of my grandfather teaching me to fish on these bayous before the fences went up. The weight of this movement is growing and it proves that we will not let our heritage be locked away behind private gates.

I grew up fishing these canals with my father and it breaks my heart to see them locked behind gates now. We are almost at a thousand signatures and hitting that mark will prove we are a force the legislature cannot ignore. Keep our navigable waters open to fishermen but respect the privately owned land itself. We need our kids to be able to enjoy the state's waters without worry that they are trespassing while in a boat.
I have been run out of marsh areas that I had fished for years. Now I am barred from the Breaux Canal. This is pure greed. The Louisiana legislature needs to protect the rights of sportsmen who want to fish the navigable waterways in Louisiana
I feel that the public is slowly getting there rights stripped away by the rich. How am I going to take my children fishing if almost every place I fish is getting posted. I respect staying of for hunting season but after it closes fishing should be free game to the public.
Water that flows through those canals belong to the State of La. As a citizen, I should be able to follow / navigate those waters. Leave the water and enter the land - no - that land I consider privately owned. Lets call upon our newly elected Governor to do the right thing and hear our voices.
I enjoy bringing my two young children to orange grove as I did as a kid. Unfortunately, it is possible they will not get to experience it going forward due to it being gated. Disappointing and upsetting!
The leasee's are getting out of hand. Some hold guns drawn making their point. That's not being law biding person, one of my Bass Club members said one person pointed a gun at him until he left the Orange Groove area. But yet they are using their mud boats to run down Coots and shoot them out of a moving boat. No wonder they are running the law biding fishermen out the area so they can conduct their unlawful activities.
The law allowing land owners to block off canals need to be changed to preserve areas of our children and Grandchildren to fish.

Born and raised in Louisiana I live in Kentucky now but we frequent Lafitte every year for fishing. I know many others including residents that enjoy those water ways. I fish from Michigan to La and Louisiana is the only state I have fished that you can own the water????
