Name: Robin Chapman on Jul 15, 2009Comments: When the moving of the statues was first mooted there was an outcry agaist the proposal. As a result the consultants made a statement that this idea had been dropped. I believed them, so can you imagine my dismay and disgust that they have now renaged on that statement. It is clear to me that the wrong consultants have been appointed. They have no empathy with the City and its history and are determined to change our market place into a continental plaza. In particular if the horse is moved to the top of the market place its background will the shops of national chains just like any other town in Britain. Contrast that view with St Nicks and the Town Hall as background. The present character of the market place will be destroyed. The consultants should resign in shame.Flag

Name: Lisa Vargo on Jul 15, 2009Comments: I am very pleased that the City of Durham Trust is sponsoring this petition. I recently attended the simulation of the re-siting of the statue and only heard Durham citizens voice their dismay and disapproval over the plans and their sense their voices were not being heard. I hope that this petition will provide the means to register public opinion.Flag

Name: Nik Goudie on Jul 17, 2009Comments: The statue is and should remain the focal point of the Market Square. The proposed move would permanently unbalance the space in the interests of occasional events. These could be planned around the statue as a characteristic feature of the Durham City landsape.Flag

Name: Alan Hayton on Jul 17, 2009Comments: I agree with the above points in particular that the staue is a focal point of the market place and should be in a position of prominance. Also, if some kind of ballot is to be taken to indicate public support it should be conducted in a more democratic way than it has been done so far.Flag
