The internal workings of Washington lobbying organizations are completely unregulated, however these are businesses, not private clubs. Trade associations should be required to draft their own guidelines for equitable and ethical treatment of their members, and their leaders should promise to adhere to them. These should include anti-bullying provisions, and should ensure that small company board members are not biased by excessive financial dependence on the big players. Adherence to voluntary standards should be adequate, but if not, government regulation may be necessary.
