This is a petition to ask the Federal Government to start regulating the amount of time citizens are able to spend outdoors in the sunlight. Below are some facts taken from the website skincancer.org 1) About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. 2) Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is a proven human carcinogen. 3) Ten minutes in a sunbed matches the cancer-causing effects of 10 minutes in the Mediterranean summer sun. 4) Currently tanning beds are regulated by the FDA as Class I medical devices, the same designation given elastic bandages and tongue depressors. The government regulates tanning beds, but they're currently doing nothing to regulate how long people can spend outside in the sun! Given that costs for treatment of types of skin cancer can be well over $1.5 billion dollars a year, we as a nation are paying the health care costs of a few people who don't know when to say enough to the sun! Sign my petition to make sure that the government can safely manage our exposure to deadly sunlight.
