The following petition was created by parents of Lefferts Gardens Charter School and reflects concerns and recommendations on how we feel LGCS can develop and sustain a working relationship with one of its most valuable resource, its teachers.

We the parents of Lefferts Gardens Charter School are petitioning the School Leadership and Board of Trustees to consider amending or implementing protocols around the following:

  • Protocol for Teacher Dismissal - We would like to recommend that the protocol for terminating a teacher follow a Due Process that includes stages of verbal and written warnings. This includes a performance improvement plan at the stage of written warnings. Should a termination be considered, an inquiry should be made into the actions or events leading to that decision and a written report be presented to the teacher/employee for their file. Lastly, that the teacher be given the opportunity to make both verbal and written statements on their behalf.

  • Feedback - We would like to recommend the development of a consistent and constructive observation program be developed to support and develop teachers in their practice.

  • Open Communication - We would like to recommend that there be a regularly scheduled opportunity for teachers, staff and school administration to be heard in an open, honest environment. One where dialogue, exchange of new ideas and suggestions for improvements on current school policy are encouraged, documented and followed up on.

  • Protocols for classroom expectations and professional duties - We would like to recommend that a clear protocol be developed and communicated to teachers around classroom expectations and professional duties. A clear outline of expected learning environments, design and implementation of student work should be clear at the beginning of the year. Additionally, schedules should include prep time for lesson planning and time and resources to reflect and address any student concerns that may have arisen during the day. We sincerely hope that the recommendations above will serve to foster growth and inspire the development of a constructive, supportive and professional framework that will lead to a healthy teaching and learning environment for all involved, especially our children.
