Let Palestinians Study was launched in June 2008 at the NUS Black Students' Campaign conference. The campaign has been initiated by Khaled Al Mudallal, a Palestinian student who was trapped in Gaza last year for six months when Israeli policies restricting freedom of movement prevented him from returning to his studies at Bradford University.
Khaled was just one of hundreds of students prevented from leaving Gaza to attend university. Many remain trapped and are prevented from taking up places at universities around the world.
Higher education opportunities are extremely limited in Gaza. Many vital disciplines, including speech therapy, dentistry and physical therapy are not taught in Gaza, and there is no opportunity for doctoral study in Gaza or the West Bank.
The right to education is a human right, and these students are being prevented from exercising it even though they have the legal documentation that is necessary to study outside of Palestine. They are restrained by a system of oppression.
