Name: Oliver Christopherson on Feb 24, 2013Comments: My family are visually impaired and our daughter is confined to a wheelchair. We could easily reach Letchworth if it has step-free access to the station. It's ironic that Stevenage (our station) is getting new lifts when it's already accessible, whereas Letchworth which once had lifts has lost them.Flag

Name: Angela Stroud on Feb 24, 2013Comments: Although I live in south Herts, I travel to Letchworth Garden City for weekly physiotherapy at the Herfordshire MS Therapy Centre. When it is more convenient for me, I use tthe train from Hertford to LGC. The provision of a lift at LGC station would be an added improvement, and when my MS progresses, this will ensure that I can carry on attending the HMSTC - the lack of a lift will in due course adversely affect me.Flag

Comments: Oh my goodness, this is surely a no brainer. Why this hasn't been done decades ago I'll never know. Please stop excluding swathes of society from accessing basic transport facilities in our town! This is not going to cost that much and is utterly essential. Thank you for setting up this petition. xFlag -

Name: Bridget Poulter on Feb 24, 2013Comments: My sister has MS as did my grandmother, so I know how the condition affects mobility. Not being able to get to places which should be accessible like public transport IS discrimination. I love LGC and as a town that was so forward-thinking at its inception, it seems unthinkable that it is so backward now in looking after the concerns of all its citizens and visitors.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Feb 24, 2013Comments: I live in Letchworth & use a wheelchair. Travelling by train is at present very difficult. The nearest station with step free access to the platform is Stevenage. To use the train at the moment I need to phone disabled assistance at least 24 hours before I want to travel & specify the exact trains I want to use. They then arrange for a wheelchair friendly taxi to take me from Letchworth to Stevenage Station & I transfer to a train there. My return journey is the same process in reverse. This makes using the train very difficult and time consuming. Stevenage station want me to arrive by taxi no later than 30 minutes before my train is due. This is to make sure they have staff available to operate the lifts as they are not automatic. The taxi companies say to allow 45 minutes to get from Letchworth to Stevenage station. I am also supposed to be at Letchworth 15 minutes before the time my taxi is booked for. The journey from Letchworth to Kings Cross by train only takes 35 minutes but I have to add another 90 minutes for the taxi service from Letchworth to Stevenage. I use the trains mostly for leisure trips to London. It is easy to specify a train for the journey into London but the return is much more difficult. If the return train is delayed or cancelled the taxi has to be rearranged at short notice, which is not always possible & leaves me stranded at Stevenage. If the show I have gone to see runs late & I miss my designated train then it is not possible to rearrange the taxi transfer. I would also like the flexibility to decide on the day when to return home from London. The result of all this is that I hardly ever use the trains or go into London. If I do go to London I usually have to drive to my destination or most of the way, find parking then get a wheelchair friendly bus or tube service. It depends on where & when I am travelling which option I use. If I am travelling north I just drive. In theory I could drive to Stevenage & get a train from there but there is not enough parking available at the station to do this. I tend to travel off peak & the car park is full with commuters cars. Putting lifts in at Letchworth would solve my problems but not everyone's, due to the hours the station is staffed. At stevenage, the platform staff provide a ramp so that I can get my wheelchair on and off the train. Letchworth is not staffed into the evenings so no ramp would be available. Fortunately I can walk short distances & transfer out of my chair. If there is no ramp available I would therefore be able to get on & off the train; providing the lifts from platforms to street level were still available when the station is not staffed. I know that the lack of a ramp is not an issue for many of my disabled friends. The reason they can't use Letchworth Station purely because there are too many steep steps to get to & from the platforms. Fitting lifts would therefore make Letchworth station accessible to most people.Flag
