Whereas, while the spirit and culture of Legett come ultimately from the residents, the building serves as a symbol and rallying point for those who share the values of hard work, responsibility, and diligence and serves as a site where those values are encouraged; and
Whereas our location on the academic plaza and our unique room style are both contributing factors in Legett’s attracting this sort of people; and
Whereas Legett has developed a highly supportive social network which better enables residents to deal with their daily stresses and enjoy their lives; and
Whereas this supportive network along with Legett’s low cost and kitchen, which allows the production of native dishes, has made Legett very attractive to international students, the attraction and integration of which is a goal of this University as stated in Vision 20/20; and
Whereas Legett is one of the few low-cost, all-female residence options on this campus, which, in addition to its unique style, makes it an attractive option for low-income, first generation students, which are also a stated priority of this University according to Vision 20/20; and
Whereas this low cost enables these low-income students to work less, allowing them more time to concentrate more on their studies which further contributes to Texas A&M’s goal of better serving these students; and
Whereas Legett has a retention rate approximately twice that of the all-campus female average, making Legett a great contributor to the University’s goal of increasing the percentage of students who live on-campus; and
Whereas this high retention rate also leads to Legett’s unique class composition, which includes an unusually high percentage of upperclassmen, a fact which facilitates the passing of information from older students to incoming classes; and
Whereas the residents of Legett have developed a unique culture of academic accountability founded on the enthusiastic support of each other’s academic success through an unofficial tutoring network; and
Whereas the strength of this unique culture is evidenced by Legett’s consistently high GPR, holding RHA’s award for highest female hall GPR for the past two years and actively contributing to the academic goals of Vision 20/20; and
Whereas our Hall is named after Judge KK Legett, a self-educated man who served as president of the Board of Directors from 1907-1911 and whose tireless dedication to increasing on-campus housing led to his lobbying the governor of this state for funding for on-campus housing with the words, “This is the only institution in the civilized world where a number of its students are forced to live in tents;” and
Whereas, as a mark of gratitude, the Board of Directors authorized the building of a dorm named in Legett’s honor; and
Whereas the contributions of a man who fought tirelessly for on-campus housing are better honored by memorializing his name in a residence hall than in an office space; and
Whereas the ladies of Legett have nearly reached their 100-year anniversary as a residence hall; and
We the undersigned request the continued existence of KK Legett Hall as a residence hall. |
