Comments: Dear Grammy Executives, It is with great concern that I write you regarding your decision to remove the Latin Jazz category from Grammy consideration. I have worked with celebrated artists that include Oscar Hernandez, John Santos, Jesus Diaz, John Calloway, Wayne Wallace, Quique Cruz, Pete Escovedo, Ray Obiedo, Tito y su Son de Cuba, Michael Spiro, Wilson (Chembo) Corniel y Chaworo and the list goes on and on. As a booking manager, that has a well rounded genre of artists, I can definitely tell you it is challenging enough to book Jazz in venues and without the support of the Grammy's to Latin Jazz it is nearly impossible to book Latin Jazz artists in the established Jazz venues. A Grammy nomination translates directly to work for the artists. In a culture where transparent lyrics and copied beats are being celebrated, please keep the genres that give the Grammy's credibility and I ask you for the sake of music integrity around the world to keep the Latin Jazz component as part of the categories for consideration. Sincerely, Stephanie Dalton -- Urban Music Presents Jazz*Community*Accessibility 415-503-8207 - Mobile 415-796-2319 - Office www.UrbanMusicPresents.com

Comments: The decision to drop the award for best latin Jazz recording marginalizes, denigrates, and denies our music. How do you think this decision will affect the shrinking radio play we are already seeing? Latin Jazz is a music born in the USA, a true American art form, with an almost 70 year history of valued contributions. Mario Bauza, Machito, Dizzy Gillespie, Chico O'Farrill, Paquito D'Rivera, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Cal Tjader, Charlie Parker, Billy Taylor, Mongo Santamaria ,Herbie Mann, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Dorham, Art Blakey, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Chucho Valdes, Jerry Gonzalez, Gato Barbieri, and so many others have given us so much true art in the name of Latin jazz

Comments: Eliminating the Latin jazz category is akin to eliminating an entire group of people and their music. Please DO NOT DO THIS and then justify it by subsuming the genre into JAZZ. It will NOT be an even playing field.

Comments: I fully support the petition to re-instate the LATIN JAZZ category at the GRAMMY's immediately, for several reasons : 1. We as NARAS members were never consulted about these category consolidation plans. They are quite unnecessary, and needlessly require that Latin Jazz, a distinct art form, gets lumped together in a generic jazz category with only remotely related genres such as smooth jazz. 2. Latin Jazz is one of the several now-eliminated categories which had "leveled the playing field" for musicians against the dominance of the major labels - which did not get much of a "hair cut" during the GRAMMY category consolidations. 3. Latin Jazz, plus the other Latin categories where there were consolidations, represent the pride and provide self esteem for the largest, fastest rising ethnic "minority " poplulation in the US. The uncalled-for GRAMMY cutbacks are viewed by many as an insult, and a slap in the face. 4. The entire NARAS effort of eliminating 30% of the present categories is misguided. A strong argument can be made to increase, not eliminate, the number of categories - for example in creating a wider range of "Best New Artist" categories within the fields of say, Jazz, Classical, Latin, etc.

Comments: It is a mistake to eliminate Latin Jazz as well as reduce the number of categories for Classical music, since both will probably be more enduring musically than hip hop, for example. Both categories have produced many superb recordings over the years and NARAS needs to continue recognizing this by restoring the cuts that have been proposed for the 54th annual Grammy Awards.

I am writing to you to offer some alternatives to the realignment of the Jazz Categories that NARAS has seemingly adopted. I will elucidate point by point. 1) I believe that there should be 3 main categories (see 54th Grammy list)—Traditional Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, and Latin Jazz. The first 2 are self-explanatory. The elimination of the Latin Jazz category discounts the fact that it is a very distinctive jazz form, different from the first two. It also dismisses the work of such giants as Mongo Santamaria, Ray Baretto, Astrud Giberto, Stan Getz, Paquito D’Rivera, Dizzy Gillespie & Machito, Horace Silver, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Donato, Bobby Sanabria, Tania Maria, Flora Purim, Chick Corea, Airto, all Brazilian Jazz, and all the young up and coming musicians, not all of Latino descent, who love to play this music. There are also so many Latin Jazz fans (including all the recent influx of Latinos in the US) who are consumers of this music that denying this entire category of music will greatly hurt music sales, which is contrary to the mission of NASAS as I understand it. 2) The inclusion of “Best Improvised Jazz Solo” is entirely too vague. Which instrument are you talking about…sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar (acoustic & electric), piano, drums, bass (electric & acoustic), etc.? If you want to narrow some categories, this one is the most expendable. 3) The “Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group” category is redundant and can be included in one of the 3 main Jazz categories posited in my first point. I hope that you take my suggestions in the spirit in which they were intended. That is, of inclusion and fairness, and the continued availability and quality of the only truly American musical idiom widely disseminated, that being Jazz itself. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best regards, Bob Crawford, President, RMCO MUSIC
