If we are going to give it away to our cars, what's left for usIf I want to picnic in a parking lot, there are plenty of options around the city. When I moved down by the lake in 1993, the majority of people I ran into while walking my dog at 6:00 a.m. were Johns coming off the Gardiner looking for a quickie before going to work. People would say that you were crazy to go down there because that's where folks were murdered.Lights and a boardwalk changed all that and now people run, rollerblade and actually take their children down there. We have the Sunny side pavillion and now the new Palais. That's exciting; but it should only be the beginning. Pegasus deserves a real chance for success considering the efforts they have made and the money they have spent and I believe that a real solution to the parking issue is neccessary. The park to the east of the Palais only adds to it's charm. That's a no brainer. Please reconsider using the meridian as useful parking. It is pleasant to look at, but no one is going to use it as a place to play with their kids or have a relaxing picnic. It certainly would accomodate more than 120 cars and would allow access to and from Lakeshore Blvd. in both directions I was infuriated at the meeting on April 24th. I found Sylvia Watson to be both cagey and dismissive. She certainly did nothing to try to dispel the rising anger. Maybe I am naive, but I have a hard time believing that David Miller is backing this proposal. And I will be waiting to hear his comments on this issue.

There is already too much interference with cars along the Martin Goodman Trail and should be reduced not increased. Thank You.

In an article in this week's Villager (Friday April 28/06), it is stated that 3 trees would have to be removed. Are these the willows mentioned in the Globe & Mail article

Comments (optional, but we would like to hear them): (Copy of letter to Miller and Watson) As a very long time resident of Parkdale, I am opposed to the creation of a new gravel parking lot for the Palais Royal. There must be a public consultation process to explore options that are less invasive to the waterfront. Every effort has been made to maintain the integrity of the building proper. The same care must be taken with the surrounding landscape. The City of Toronto Staff Report of May 18, 2005 states: "A detailed Landscape Plan, satisfactory to the Manager, Heritage Preservation Services and Director, Parks, Forestry and Recreation, will be required prior to undertaking any landscaping work." To the best of my knowledge, if this Plan exists, it has not been made available to the community. The community and the RMRA have proposed a number of very reasonable and practical alternatives that are in keeping with existing practice for the Ex and for Caribanna. These options must take higher priority in a public process before the approval of a new gravel parking lot. Sholem Dolgoy Parkdale
