Name: Amanda Lipsey on Nov 10, 2010Comments: And you should do some research and drop the helmet law fantasy. Studies show that helmet laws make cycling more unsafe not safer. They also remove liability from the motorist, who is at fault the majority of the time (also proven by many studies). Work on making our street safer, not legislating that we all wear foam hats that only protect your head slightly. If you want to support cyclists, then you need to listen to them. At your "Bike Summit" the entire room boo'd when you announced your bad idea for a helmet law, yet you still haven't listened. Your job is to listen to your constituents, not behaving like a tyrant and imposing whatever poorly thought out ideas you have on the public. Thank you.Flag

Some with vision, and the backbone to implement strategies that will give LA the complete streets - for pedestrians, bikers and buses as well as automobile traffic.Flag

Name: Ted Rogers on Nov 10, 2010Comments: LADOT is desperately in need of reformation and a change in culture, responsible more than any other city department for the dangerous, destructive, auto-centric focus of our streets; yet you cannot change culture by promoting from within. If this city is ever to reach its potential as a world-class city, where the streets serve all users and enhance our neighborhood rather than destroy them, you must make a bold choice to lead this department — and leave a lasting mark on the City of Angeles.Flag

Name: Vicki Karlan on Nov 10, 2010Comments: Dear Mayor: LADOT needs a visionary leader who will bring a fresh perspective and foster inter-agency collaboration to transform the current transportation system into one that provides us a full range of options for safe and efficient travel by bike, by foot, by bus and by train. Fuel independence should be the overarching goal that drives all planning and development. New perspectives from outside the current department are urgently needed now. Please do not limit your search to what's quick and easy. The City deserves better. We're looking to you to bring in exceptional talent from elsewhere rather than promote from within for more of the status quo.Flag

Name: Vicki Karlan on Nov 10, 2010Comments: Dear Mayor Villaraigosa: LA urgently needs a transportation system that fully embraces travel that's not by personal automobile. To get there, the new GM must be a strong and visionary leader who will prioritize infrastructure that enables better travel by foot, bike, bus and train. Fuel independence should drive the DOT to move people in safer, more efficient and healthier ways. Conduct a national search for the best qualified person, a skillful, poised leader, with fresh vision who can also effectively work in collaboration with city departments beyond DOT to create an integrated transportation system.Flag

Name: Severin Martinez on Nov 10, 2010Comments: This is an time important for Los Angeles. If we continue a 'business as usual' model we will be competing for increasingly limited space with more cars. Even electric cars or 'non-polluting' cars take up huge amounts of space like regular cars. The smartest decision that can be made for the City of Los Angeles is to invest heavily in transportation modes like tram systems, light rail, bus, bicycle, and walking – modes that can accommodate growth, and create a sustainable transportation system. 'Business as usual', a car centric way of moving the city will mean more pollution, more congestion, more health risks, dangerous air, dangerous streets, increased sedentary lifestyles, less space efficient land-use with limited space... basically nothing good will come from continuing car-centric thinking. This is why we need a General Manager with vision, a person who understands the needs of the future and is willing to tackle the tough task of changing the way Angelenos move. It is simply irresponsible to hire someone with lack of ambition, who considers Los Angeles' current situation acceptable. We need LADOT to stay true to its "Listen to community concerns. Learn about regional transportation needs. Lead with best tailored solutions". LADOT really needs to 'lead' as it aims to do. This requires progressive, visionary thinking which may not be found in within current LADOT staff and thus necessitating a national search for the next LADOT General Manager. The automobile has its place in society, however it does not need to dictate lives of people in Los Angeles. We need you, Mr. Villariagosa, and leaders in LADOT to be the ones remembered for reforming LA's notorious reputation as a dangerous, polluting, car-first city. We need LA to be among the happiest, and sustainable cities like Copenhagen. There is a real opportunity here to shape Los Angeles' future. Thank you Villaraigosa for your progressive transportation views, I hope you are willing to do everything you can to make Los Angeles a city that cares about people first and strives to give them options in their transportation modes and not force residents into cars.Flag

Name: Jeff Mee on Nov 10, 2010Comments: In the same way that Chief Bratton was instrumental in changing the culture of the LAPD, an outside expert can change the stagnant culture of LADOT. As we saw, after Bratton's innovation and leadership, we were again able to find a fitting replacement from among the ranks, which will be the same for DOT in the future. Transportation is not about parking. It has to be about innovation, and only someone who hasn't had to adapt to the bad behaviors the last 25 years of policy have engendered among Angelenos can provide the fresh ideas and common sense we need.Flag
