Off-Reserve Councillor Representation
Dear Kitigan Zibi Members:
I’m writing you to ask for your support in signing this petition where by we can lobby our chief and council into establishing representation for off-reserve members in the form of one councilor position who is an off reserve resident.
In doing so it will mean that the current system in place, section 74 of the Indian Act would need to be repealed so that we may conduct our own community election system (custom).
I believe the time has come that representation from off-reserve members must be addressed. As of now approximately 55% of Kitigan Zibi members live off reserve so it is not an unreasonable request in designating one councilor position for off-reserve members when we account for more than half of its population and funding.
It will take an organized effort on behalf off-reserve residents to bring about change. I plan to raise these concerns at the band meeting this Saturday (December 17, 2005) so that we can create a constructive dialogue toward finding solutions for at least one representative.
I ask you now to sign this electronic petition so it can be presented at the band meeting to demonstrate off-reserve members are concerned and representation is needed. - Megweetch –
