Thursday, May 17, 2012 It's time to bring back Klondike Days, Edmonton! http://blog.ibry.ca/2012/05/its-time-to-bring-back-klondike-days.html?m=1 500 people attended a local exhibition on the original Fort Edmonton site on October 15, 1879 but that fair evolved over the course of many years, becoming a summer fair in 1901. Since then, it's been called many different names, but presently, its known as Capital Ex. The name Capital Ex was adopted in 2006 when Northlands felt it was time to rebrand the fair and modernize the theme since a small number of people felt that the Klondike theme didn't fit any longer, but I attribute the change as something done so that people could leave their mark on Edmonton's history. Almost everyone I talk to prefers the Klondike Days name, which was used from 1962-2005. It was shortened affectionately to "K-Days" and because I grew up knowing no other name, I was horrified when...
NOT Capital EX!! Ugh, I just hate that name, so vanilla. So generic, and without any flair, personality, or history attatched to it. Well, things just got a little worse, as far as I’m concerned, for the name of Edmonton’s biggest yearly festival/exhibition. They’ve decided to subtitle, or ‘theme’, this years edition, which is not entirely new or a big deal in and of itself, as there have been many different slogans attatched to the K-Days moniker on posters and promotional materials over the years. No, its the subtitle they’re giving this years incarnation specifically, that I’m bitching about here. The “Ex” Organizers have decided in their finite wisdom to saddle this year’s Capital Ex with the slogan Ex and the City. Seriously. Apparently, what used to be known as K-Days was so teh kiddiez, and they need to incorporate “elements for more mature adults,” according to the official Capital Ex PR. Geez, y’know I don’t really know where to...
Klondike days has become Capital Ex, and now, to make things worse this will likely be the last year for the mine and panning troughs. Apparently, Northlands needs the space to make the horse track longer. Edmonton is poorer for this turn of events. What theme does Capital Exhibition portray? What does it say about Edmonton’s past? (or future for that matter) For as many years as I can remember the mine was the reason that I made my way to the exhibition grounds. The King of the Klondike competitions in other parts of Edmonton also were part of the Klondike experience. We are not sure what will become of the Klondike World Invitational Gold Panning Championships in the future, but this year should be a good one! With this knowledge, I am going to make sure that I go and pan this year I hope you all will as well. Sincerely, Robin Rosborough Editor, Alberta Gold Prospectors Association http://www.agpa.ca
