The petition
The Claimant writing as one of hundreds of detainees to express his concern about the hidden plight of a vulnerable group of people in the UK, namely, those who have sought asylum at some stage and who are detained solely under Immigration Act powers.
Seeking asylum is not a crime, yet many people who have sought asylum in the UK are deprived of their liberty even though, in many cases, the chances of enforcing their return within a reasonable time-scale remain slim. The UK government has stated its commitment to detaining people for the shortest possible time yet many people are languishing in detention. The human cost of detention is high, particularly for the most vulnerable groups of people including torture survivors.
