The Ministry confirmed today that the proposed changes to school hours and term dates have been formally withdrawn. We are now reviewing the final documentation to ensure no similar amendments are introduced through secondary legislation.

We are opposed to the Michael Gove's proposals to cut school holidays and lengthen the school day. We believe these proposals are about dismantling teachers' national terms and conditions. Gove claims the changes will improve education but compares us to Singapore and Hong Kong, countries with small numbers of schools and not to similiar countries with proven educational track records like Finland, where days are shorter and holidays are longer and attainment is consistently excellent. He also neglects to mention that independent schools often break for two weeks more during the summer than their state counterparts. We call on all teacher unions to respond rapidly and robustly to any attempt to change the length of the day and shorten holidays.

This is just an attack on staff conditions hidden behind a fake concern for grades.

Teachers cant work miracles if they are burnt out. The current hours are plenty long enough.
